Position Overview

Roku, Inc. is in search of a skilled and proactive attorney with a deep understanding of online advertising and data privacy regulations to enhance its legal team. This role presents a unique opportunity to offer legal insights on groundbreaking issues within the TV streaming sector and to support Roku's advertising initiatives from conception through to execution.

The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of international privacy and data security laws, experience in product launch support, and a proven ability to translate legal requirements into practical guidance for Product and Engineering teams. A solid understanding of online media, digital advertising technologies, internet technologies, and cloud computing is essential, along with prior experience in implementing privacy-by-design strategies. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong analytical skills, sound judgment, a practical approach to problem-solving, and the adaptability to thrive in a dynamic environment. An entrepreneurial mindset is crucial for independent work in this role, which is pivotal in facilitating the company's swift expansion.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Collaborating closely with Ad Sales, Ad Partnerships, Ad Product, and Engineering teams to develop solutions that effectively manage legal risks while advancing business objectives and safeguarding user interests globally.
  • Providing legal counsel on privacy, data security, and other product-related matters concerning adtech and partnership agreements, as well as agreements related to content and digital product distribution.
  • Advising on a broad spectrum of legal issues, including consumer protection and data privacy laws, ensuring compliance with U.S. and international legal standards and industry best practices through the application of privacy-by-design principles.
  • Working cross-functionally with various Roku business units, including ad product, programming, content and services, engineering, marketing, HR, and customer support.
  • Assisting in the development of scalable processes for the legal review of new product launches.
  • Staying informed on the latest developments in laws, regulations, and industry trends relevant to media, ad tech, Big Data, OTT, IoT, and smart devices, including federal and state data privacy laws and consumer protection regulations.
  • Collaborating with other legal team members to address the company's broader data collection, storage, usage, and transfer practices.
  • Supporting Roku's privacy compliance initiatives as necessary.
Qualifications:
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience as a practicing attorney.
  • Significant in-house experience advising on data privacy, data protection, and the legal aspects of product development in the technology sector (experience in advertising technology is preferred).
  • Strong working knowledge of global privacy and data security laws; familiarity with other consumer laws is advantageous.
  • Understanding of both B2B and B2C elements of the digital advertising ecosystem, including a solid grasp of various advertising technologies.
  • A passion for technology and the ability to quickly comprehend complex technology and product use cases.
  • A Bachelor's degree and a Juris Doctorate from a U.S. accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in the U.S.
