Position Summary

The Survey Crew Chief is tasked with overseeing a field survey team, executing a variety of surveys such as construction, topographic, right-of-way, and control surveys. This role encompasses managing field survey operations, ensuring data accuracy, maintaining equipment, and compiling field data into comprehensive maps and records. The Crew Chief serves as the senior field surveyor, offering guidance and training to team members while ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead a field survey crew, directing and managing survey operations for various projects. Engage in pre-survey planning discussions with project managers and engineers.
  • Collect field survey data utilizing conventional and GPS techniques. Set up and operate surveying instruments, including electronic total stations and data collectors, to measure distances, elevations, and angles. Conduct field surveys for infrastructure projects.
  • Maintain accurate field data records and project documentation.
  • Train and mentor crew members, ensuring they are well-versed in contemporary surveying technologies and methodologies.
  • Oversee the maintenance and inventory of company survey equipment, ensuring proper setup and operation of all types of surveying instruments.
  • Continuously explore innovative surveying methods and technologies, providing training to crew members on new equipment.
  • May undertake mapping compliance or related office survey tasks as a temporary assignment to fulfill training or experience requirements for professional licensure.

Physical Requirements:

Must be capable of working outdoors in diverse weather conditions and challenging terrains. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds is required.

Travel Requirements:

Most assignments will be local; however, occasional out-of-town assignments may require overnight travel.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in surveying, engineering, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • A minimum of 4 years of surveying experience, including at least 1 year in a supervisory capacity as a Crew Chief or Junior Crew Chief.
  • Proficient in operating surveying equipment (e.g., GPS, total station) and software (e.g., AutoCAD, GIS). Strong skills in mathematics and trigonometry are essential.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
