Substance Abuse Treatment Counselor

Location: Madison, Wisconsin

Employment Status: Full Time Regular

Position Overview:

Potawatomi Defense Operations (PDO) is in search of a dedicated Substance Abuse Treatment Counselor to deliver counseling and case management services to members of the Wisconsin Army National Guard (WIARNG).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accept referrals for service members facing Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) charges and other significant alcohol-related incidents, including self-referrals.
  • Conduct Alcohol Use Disorder Assessments (AUDA) to evaluate the severity of alcohol use.
  • Assess the risk level associated with a service member's alcohol consumption through the AUDA process.
  • Provide tailored counseling and case management for service members struggling with alcohol use:
  • Offer guidance and recommend rehabilitation strategies based on the assessed risk level.
  • Connect service members with appropriate civilian treatment resources, the Joint Wellness and Recovery Program (JWRP), and/or MyPrime for Life based on their assessed needs.
  • Identify any behavioral health issues during the AUDA and refer service members to the HSS Social Work team as necessary.
  • Organize and facilitate retreats for the Joint Wellness and Recovery Program (JWRP).
  • Follow up with service members and their commands post-treatment to evaluate the effectiveness of the programs and recommend further treatment if needed.
  • Provide evening and weekend support to service members and units as required.
  • Monitor the progress of service members in the MyPrime program.

Administrative Duties:

  • Adhere to deadlines for administrative tasks and program activities.
  • Maintain accurate records and data files to enable management to track program outcomes.

Qualifications:

  • Certification as a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) or a Substance Abuse Counselor in Training (SAC-IT) is mandatory.
  • A Bachelor's degree in a Human Services discipline is preferred but not essential.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Proven experience in counseling, ideally with at least one year in related services or public health.
  • A combination of relevant experience and education will be considered.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with senior leadership.
  • Proficient in monitoring program execution against established metrics and identifying areas for improvement.
  • Strong team player with excellent interpersonal skills.

Communication Skills:

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication abilities to engage with diverse audiences.
  • Capable of working independently in a dynamic, multi-tasking environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and able to produce high-quality deliverables.
  • Understanding and adherence to corporate values and standards.
  • Fluent in English (reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension).
  • Ability to pass background checks and drug screenings.

Additional Requirements:

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and maintain a clean driving record.
  • Eligible for access to military installations following security clearances.
  • Willingness to travel for training as required; some travel is expected.
  • Flexibility in work schedule is essential to support military needs.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily an office setting within a National Guard facility.
  • May require unusual hours, including weekends and evenings.
  • Generally low to moderate noise levels in the workplace.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting; moderate physical stamina required.
  • Normal standing and walking periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close and distance vision, color vision, and depth perception.
