Job Title: Planning Director

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Planning Director to lead our Planning and GIS Department. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of land use plans, zoning regulations, and geographic information systems (GIS) for Cascade County.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Direct and administer the day-to-day activities of the Planning Department staff, including land use planning, subdivision review, and permitting.
  • Plan, direct, coordinate, and supervise the development of an effective long-range and current planning program goals and objectives for the County.
  • Supervise and evaluate the activities and work plans of professional, technical, and support personnel.
  • Serve as Zoning Administrator for Cascade County and Floodplain Administrator for Cascade County.
  • Review and recommend amendments to the Growth Policy, JLUS, and related policies.
  • Coordinate with state and federal agencies on land management issues relating to the monitoring and remediation of contaminated sites and/or the repurposing of former industrial sites for future land uses.
  • Review land use and zoning policies to ensure compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Conduct research and prepare or supervise the preparation of reports and recommendations on zoning, land use, transportation, populations, community facilities, and other related projects.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in a Planning, Geography, Geology, Public Administration, or closely related field and five (5) years of progressively responsible work experience in planning, zoning, subdivisions, stormwater, or floodplain, including a minimum of three (3) years in a supervisory capacity.
  • Or, Master's Degree preferred in a related field with three (3) years of supervisory experience.
  • Valid Driver's License issued by the State of Montana.
  • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, supervise, and evaluate the work of professional, para-professional, and clerical workers to meet departmental goals and community needs.
  • Ability to communicate well with others in both technical and non-technical terms, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain composure and professional demeanor under stressful and sometimes adversarial conditions when interacting with the public.
What We Offer:
  • Competitive salary range of $81,000.00-$86,000.00 per year.
  • Full-time position with benefits, including AD&D insurance, dental insurance, health insurance, life insurance, paid time off, retirement plan, and vision insurance.
  • 8-hour shift, day shift.
