Position Overview:
The Certified Surgical Technologist operates as a vital member of the surgical team. Under the guidance of the surgeon and registered nurse, this role ensures a secure operating room environment, verifies that all equipment is functioning correctly, and supports the surgical procedure to enhance patient safety.

Expertise in surgical techniques, human anatomy, surgical protocols, and the effective use of tools and technologies is essential for providing safe care during invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.


Essential Qualifications:
Required

High School Diploma or Equivalent

Completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist program or an equivalent military surgical training program

Current American Heart Association BLS certification

Certification as a Surgical Technologist

Preferred

Minimum of 1 year of experience as a surgical technologist in an acute care operating room setting

Key Responsibilities:


In addition to the core responsibilities outlined below, employees are expected to complete all mandatory education as required by DNV standards, Bozeman Health policies, and other regulatory requirements.

Ensure the preparation of case carts aligns with preference cards. Interpret and understand preference cards for the acquisition of instruments and supplies.


Maintain clear communication with operating room personnel and sterile processing staff to coordinate instrumentation for both scheduled and unscheduled procedures.

Review the daily surgical schedule with the charge nurse and sterile processing coordinator to identify potential delays and scheduling conflicts.


Take charge of the core communication duties associated with the role, delegate tasks appropriately, and manage breaks and lunches with relevant team members.


Act as a resource for the Surgical Services and Sterile Processing Departments in obtaining necessary supplies and instruments for both scheduled and unscheduled surgical operations.

Collaborate with materials management regarding supply usage and distribution.

Physical Demands:

Must be able to lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds (e.g., assisting with patient needs, transferring patients).
Utilize upper body strength for tasks such as CPR and physically restraining patients.


Work Hours:

The role may require extended hours, involving sitting, walking, or standing for eight or more hours each day.


Flexible Scheduling:
Availability to work beyond a standard 40-hour workweek, including weekends and after-hours shifts may be necessary.

On-Call Duties:
On-call responsibilities may be required to address organizational and patient needs promptly.

Effective Communication:
Proficient in communication skills, both in-person and through various technological means.

Handling Difficult Situations:

The role may involve managing challenging interactions, requiring the ability to de-escalate situations with upset patients or families.


Repetitive Tasks:
Ability to perform repetitive tasks as necessary to fulfill job responsibilities.

Exposure Risks:
Job tasks may involve exposure to:
Bloodborne pathogens, including blood, bodily fluids, or tissues.
Radiation in environments where medical imaging is conducted.
Various chemicals and medications utilized in healthcare settings, including cleaning products and disinfectants.
Infectious diseases due to patient contact in areas with contagious illnesses.
Emotionally challenging situations, such as interactions with distressed patients or families.
