Role Summary

The Pre-Operative Nursing Specialist plays a crucial role in the surgical admission process, conducting thorough assessments with patients before their scheduled procedures. This may involve direct in-person consultations or comprehensive phone interviews. The specialist will gather detailed medical, pharmaceutical, surgical, and familial histories, ensuring that all relevant health information is accurately updated.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conducts patient assessments prior to surgical admission, effectively communicating findings to the relevant healthcare team members.
  • Ensures that all pre-operative care protocols are met through a systematic nursing process, which includes assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Provides patient education and teaching in accordance with established ASC guidelines.
  • Evaluates and documents patient interventions and outcomes, adjusting care plans as necessary.
  • Coordinates with external medical specialists to secure surgical clearances when required.
  • Prioritizes patient safety by assessing both physical and psychological needs.
  • Responds promptly to patient inquiries and concerns.
  • Conducts follow-up calls post-surgery as needed.
  • Offers general health information to patients.
  • Informs anesthesia teams of any critical lab results, assessments, medications, or specific patient needs prior to surgery.
  • Communicates important instructions regarding arrival times and fasting requirements to patients.
  • Demonstrates adaptability in patient care tasks to meet the ASC's objectives efficiently.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree from an accredited Registered Nursing (RN) program.
  • A minimum of two years of peri-operative experience, preferably in orthopaedics.
  • At least one year of experience in an Ambulatory Surgery Center is preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and medical records software.
  • Strong understanding of nursing theory, practice, and legal standards, along with proficiency in equipment used in an ASC setting.
  • Valid Colorado Registered Nurse (RN) license, in good standing.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
Physical Requirements
  • The role is set in a typical medical office environment, which may include frequent interruptions and distractions.
  • Involves moving throughout the clinic for extended periods, assisting patients with mobility, and handling equipment as necessary.
  • Must be capable of lifting or moving up to 50 pounds.
