Compensation Overview
The salary range for this position reflects a nationwide market range and encompasses a variety of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary will be influenced by several factors, including the complexity and location of the role, as well as the candidate's skills, education, training, credentials, and experience. Employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards as part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program.

What Is the Opportunity?
The Bond & Specialty Insurance (BSI) division offers management and professional liability, cyber, crime insurance, and surety bonds to businesses of all sizes. The BSI Claim Counsel team is responsible for conducting comprehensive investigations, analyses, evaluations, and resolutions of claims and related litigation to ensure exceptional customer service and optimize claim outcomes. As a key member of our team, you will not only handle claims but also provide legal guidance to underwriting and non-attorney claim colleagues, while participating in strategic initiatives.
What Will You Do?
- Adhere to operational policies to analyze, investigate, and resolve BSI claims of varying severity with moderate supervision.
- Prepare and present management reports that accurately reflect loss development, potential financial exposure, reserve adjustments, coverage issues, and recovery strategies.
- Engage and manage outside counsel while utilizing litigation management plans and budgets.
- Communicate significant claim exposures with underwriting.
- Develop skills to identify recovery opportunities and coordinate efforts with the Recovery Management Unit.
- Travel to attend mediations, settlement conferences, claim conferences, field office visits, trials, and depositions.
- Enhance policy interpretation and coverage analysis skills, including drafting coverage opinions supported by case law.
- Strengthen negotiation skills for settlements and review releases and agreements.
- Support underwriting marketing efforts through participation in broker visits and risk mitigation seminars.
- Monitor market conditions, conduct research, and draft materials to inform colleagues on legal impacts affecting underwriting and claims.
- Obtain and maintain necessary adjusters' licenses.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.

- Five or more years of relevant legal or claims handling experience.
- Proven ability to navigate conflict and resolve issues professionally.
- Sound decision-making skills and the ability to negotiate within designated authority limits.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for clear articulation of coverage determinations.
- Effective time management skills with attention to detail and analytics.
- Ability to foster collaborative relationships with colleagues, customers, and business partners.
What is a Must Have?
- Bachelor's Degree.
- Juris Doctorate Degree.
- Licensed and in good standing to practice law in the relevant jurisdiction.
- Two years of relevant legal experience.
