Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Director of Business Services, the Senior Accountant is tasked with the creation of financial reports, which includes maintaining accounting standards, practices, and procedures to guarantee precise and timely financial statements. The Senior Accountant evaluates financial data leading to the formulation of annual financial statements in alignment with institutional policies and the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB). This role organizes the development of the Proposed, Revised, and Estimated budget summary and analysis in accordance with institutional policies while ensuring the budget remains balanced consistently.

The Senior Accountant is responsible for preparing general ledger journal entries, executing month-end closing procedures, performing account reconciliations, and analyzing the appropriateness of balances. This position is required to meet all scheduled monthly financial reporting deadlines and provide accurate and timely analysis and research on assigned departments or entities. It ensures that all accounting responsibilities comply with the established fiscal policies and procedures of the institution and the State of Tennessee. This role is accountable for achieving the institution's goals while adhering to academic accounting principles in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and GASB standards. The Senior Accountant must conduct research to ensure consistency and accuracy, ensuring compliance with institutional policies and procedures.

Job Duties
  • 50% - Oversee the workflow of accounting staff, including recruiting, recommending, and assisting in the evaluation of assigned personnel per institutional policies. Manage and submit the personnel budget process. Post entries related to budget revisions. Review submissions from junior accountants for accuracy and completeness. Conduct general ledger reconciliations on various liability accounts. Assist with inquiries related to general ledger transactions. Ensure all financial and accounting data is maintained accurately. Prepare and review account reconciliations. Investigate accounting issues and suggest appropriate accounting treatments. Organize files and manage document scanning. - (Essential)
  • 35% - Accountable for advanced reporting and reconciliation. Prepare audit schedules, financial statements, and statistical data related to the annual audit and financial reports. Develop complex journal entries and supporting documentation. Assist with special projects and ad hoc reporting. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Engage in monthly, quarterly, and annual closing processes. Prepare monthly variance analyses for management review. Reconcile payroll, including tax, garnishment, direct deposit issues, overpayment adjustments, and retirement adjustments. - (Essential)

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Demonstrated progressive experience as an accountant is essential. Comprehensive knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and GASB standards is critical. Proven detail-oriented work style with effective written and verbal communication skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and Word. A minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience in bookkeeping or accounting.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in public accounting is preferred. CPA, CGFM, or other relevant licensure is advantageous. Familiarity with Ellucian systems.

ABILITIES
Ability to manage staff and handle multiple tasks or projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines. Capable of prioritizing workload and working with minimal supervision. Maintains organized and up-to-date files. Able to perform advanced accounting duties in accordance with GAAP.

KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of general ledger and related submodules. Understanding of Board of Regents and State of Tennessee Accounting Policies and Procedures. Extensive knowledge of GAAP and budgetary experience.

SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, initiative, teamwork, problem-solving, independent judgment, organization, communication (both verbal and written), time management, project management, spreadsheet integration, and presentation skills. Proficient with computer applications and programs relevant to the position (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite and Banner). Strong attention to detail and follow-up skills. Exceptional customer service skills and professional communication etiquette.
