JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE
The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is responsible for applying the nursing process to deliver safe, age-appropriate, direct and indirect patient care, while adhering to the standards set forth by the relevant nursing authority.

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
The Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum (LDRP) team provides comprehensive care throughout the childbirth process, including postpartum and neonatal care, facilitated by a skilled team of nurses and healthcare professionals in a supportive and medically secure environment.

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS
Current, unrestricted nursing license is required. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is mandatory.

PCH LDRP:
Basic Fetal Monitoring skills are essential. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification is required within six months of employment. STABLE certification must be obtained within one year of hire. Previous experience in Labor and Delivery is preferred, but qualified candidates with perinatal experience will receive training.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Social Perceptiveness: Ability to engage with a diverse patient population, from pediatrics to geriatrics, with an understanding of age-related differences in care and communication.
  • Adaptability/Flexibility: Capacity to respond promptly and effectively to high-risk situations or diverse patient needs, adjusting actions accordingly to provide optimal care.
  • Time Management: Proficiency in organizing, planning, and prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines while managing multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills to convey complex information clearly, facilitate team collaboration, and address issues tactfully.

PCH LDRP All:
Ability to perform effectively in crisis situations, demonstrating critical thinking and independent judgment. Basic knowledge of lactation and breastfeeding initiation is required, along with familiarity with perinatal emergency protocols.

PCH Labor and Delivery:
Understanding of the physical and psychological changes during pregnancy, childbirth, and the immediate postpartum period for both mother and newborn. Ability to implement appropriate interventions for families during the newborn's initial period, demonstrating accountability for actions taken. Skills in assessing high-risk pregnancies and initiating intravenous lines are necessary, along with a foundational knowledge of anesthesia and analgesia pharmacodynamics.

PCH Nursery:
Knowledge of the immediate physical and psychological changes in neonates after birth and throughout the newborn period. Ability to perform necessary interventions for families during this critical time, with specific assessment skills for high-risk neonates.

PCH Postpartum Gynecological Unit:
Understanding of the physical and psychological transitions during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period for mothers and their infants. Ability to provide appropriate interventions for families following delivery.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical requirements include lifting, standing, walking, and manual dexterity tasks, with varying frequencies of occurrence. Specific lifting and carrying capabilities are necessary to fulfill job responsibilities effectively.
