PRIMARY PURPOSE:


The primary objective of this role is to ensure that educational experiences are not disrupted by manageable health issues while guiding students towards informed decisions that impact their current and future physical, social, and emotional well-being.

This position involves coordinating and executing comprehensive health services across the campus and delivering direct health care to students.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:
Completion of an accredited professional nursing education program.
A valid registered nurse license to practice professional nursing in Texas from the State Board of Nurse Examiners, with the current license documented in the personnel folder in the Human Resources Department upon each renewal.
Current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (CPR and AED).
Valid certification from the Texas Department of Health for conducting vision and hearing screenings.

Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to address practical problems and manage various situations requiring sound nursing and professional judgment.
Knowledge of health assessments to identify student health issues.
Capability to interpret diverse instructions presented in written, oral, diagrammatic, or scheduled formats.
Strong organizational, management, and interpersonal skills.
Proficient computer skills with a quick adaptability to new software applications.
Ability to perform CPR, AED, Heimlich maneuver, and other specialized procedures as prescribed by a physician.
Capacity to work independently while implementing district policies and procedures and meeting critical deadlines.
Ability to collaborate effectively with students, parents, and staff.
Willingness to accept guidance and direction from the campus principal.
Commitment to attending workshops and training to acquire new skills.

EXPERIENCE:
Preferred one to two years of experience as a registered nurse.
Experience in school nursing and/or working with school-aged children is preferred.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:


Deliver direct care for all ill and injured students utilizing professional assessment skills, nursing interventions, and established health protocols of the school district.

Adhere to district policies regarding incident reporting.

Screen students for disabilities that may impede the learning process and assist those with non-correctable issues in adjusting to school.

Maintain each student's cumulative health record as part of official school documentation and the Health Office system, noting current health and immunization status.

Oversee the management of communicable diseases by collaborating with students, parents, physicians, principals, and teachers; interpreting and complying with regulations on exclusion and re-admission; and reporting diseases to designated personnel.

Develop individual healthcare plans based on information from parents and physicians, sharing relevant information with LVN, teachers, and other appropriate campus staff.

Assist in managing these issues within the classroom.

Document student assessments, counseling, and healthcare procedures daily in Nurse's Notes and/or other relevant areas of the Health Office system.

Follow through on individual issues by working with students, parents, physicians, teachers, and other district personnel and community health providers.

Establish school health protocols, clinic procedures, and routine tasks for the LVN and Health Clerk, as well as any student assistants assigned to the clinic, in accordance with district policies and procedures.

Coordinate a management system for administering prescription medications to students, ensuring compliance with district policies.

Provide annual training to designated campus personnel to administer medications in the absence of the RN and LVN.

Ensure daily documentation of all medication administration within the Health Office system.
In cases of serious trauma or illness, provide appropriate on-site emergency care and seek external emergency assistance.

If parents or emergency contacts are unreachable, the RN will make decisions regarding emergency care based on professional training and experience.

Communicate with parents about serious illnesses, medication issues, special health care procedures, and confidential matters, documenting parent contacts in the Health Office system.
Maintain current skills for CPR/AED and Vision/Hearing/Spinal screening.
Conduct annual vision, hearing, and spinal screenings for students in mandated grades, ensuring timely entry of results into the Health Office and referrals.

Participate in meetings to review the Diabetes Management and Treatment Plan (DMTP) and develop the Individual Healthcare Plan (IHP) with parents, Unlicensed Diabetes Care Assistants (UDCA), and other relevant campus staff.

Provide diabetes education, monitor glucose levels, and administer routine treatment as outlined in the student's IHP.

Engage in ARD/504 meetings and collaborate with other professionals regarding health-related items in the Individual Education Plan (IEP) and Individual Program Plan (IPP).

Comply with state law and district policies when reporting suspicions of child abuse.
Assess and monitor vital signs in suspected cases of substance abuse, documenting and reporting findings to campus administration and district police.
Provide health counseling and instruction to individual students while educating faculty and staff on health-related topics.
As directed by the campus principal, conduct home visits for health-related issues.
Actively participate as a member of the campus crisis team.
Provide and document annual training for all campus personnel on HIV/AIDS and Bloodborne Pathogens.

Utilize Safe Work Practices established in the District's Bloodborne Pathogen Control Plan when cleaning body spills and providing wound care.

Develop an annual clinic budget and communicate special needs to the principal.
Report health trends and issues, including potential health and safety hazards, to the principal.
Demonstrate integrity and ethics while maintaining confidentiality.
Maintain a positive and professional image in appearance, communication, and interactions.
Meet deadlines established by supervisors.
Comply with federal/state laws, Texas Department of Health rules, and district policies, as well as campus routines and regulations.
Attend all district staff development activities for nurses, along with campus activities and meetings designated by the principal.
Stay professionally updated through the selection of quality staff development opportunities for personal growth.
Perform additional duties and accept responsibilities assigned by the principal.
