Role Overview:
This position plays a crucial role in the development and operation of New Glenn, a heavy-lift launch vehicle designed for regular transportation of people and cargo to Earth's orbit and beyond. With a reusable first stage and a seven-meter payload fairing, New Glenn is paving the way for future space endeavors.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the complete design cycle of fluid subsystems, including conceptualization, thermo-fluid modeling, structural analysis, integration, testing, and mission support.
- Collaborate with various internal teams to establish requirements, dependencies, and timelines for the delivery of integrated fluid systems.
- Lead the identification, breakdown, and estimation of work scope for the full lifecycle development of fluid hardware.
- Manage project timelines, resources, and budgets, providing updates on progress, risks, variances, and recovery strategies to program management.
- Align hardware schedules with overall program and vehicle timelines.
- Drive continuous improvement in team processes and manage assignments to ensure compliance with human spaceflight standards.
- Monitor all technical performance metrics of hardware to guarantee that development objectives are met.
- Support procurement, integration, and resolution of discrepancies.
- Coordinate testing at the fluid component and subsystem levels, including planning, execution, data analysis, and reporting.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
- A minimum of 4 years of demonstrated experience in the detailed design and development of aerospace fluid systems, along with project management throughout the product lifecycle.
- Designation as a Responsible Engineer to oversee a system with multiple designers under their guidance.
- In-depth knowledge of fluid components, including valves, regulators, and fittings.
- Familiarity with fabrication, integration processes, and quality control related to piping and machined components.
- Experience in leading multi-person development projects, managing requirements, priorities, scope, schedules, costs, and communications.
- Ability to work independently on fast-paced development programs.
- Proficient in the design of components such as valves, actuators, mechanisms, and pressurized systems.
- Experience with pneumatic and hydraulic fluid systems.
- Understanding of aerospace materials and treatments.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, or legally admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 6+ years of experience in fluid systems and/or mechanisms design.
- Experience as a responsible engineer guiding a team through the entire product lifecycle on complex programs.
- Familiarity with launch vehicle or ground cryogenic systems and complex mechanisms.
- Knowledge of supplier management best practices.
- Experience in testing pressurized systems, including pneumatics and cryogenic propellants.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., Creo Pro/E) and PDM systems.
- Experience with FEA analysis tools (preferably ANSYS).
- Knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5).
Compensation:
The compensation range for this position varies based on location and experience.
