Job Description

POSITION: Corrections Officer

DEPARTMENT: Community Corrections/Work Release

SALARY: $1,872.42 Bi-weekly

The incumbent serves as a Corrections Officer for the Tippecanoe County Work Release program, tasked with overseeing the daily activities of program participants and ensuring adherence to established rules and regulations.

DUTIES:

  • Supervises and manages Work Release program operations during evening and weekend shifts, including verifying work schedules and leave requests.
  • Orients new participants, maintains comprehensive records, provides meals, and administers prescribed medications.
  • Keeps a detailed log of activities and prepares necessary reports.
  • Ensures compliance with facility regulations and reports any inappropriate behavior to the relevant Department personnel.
  • Conducts booking procedures for detainees, including photographing, fingerprinting, and processing personal belongings.
  • Performs random inspections at work sites and upon return to the facility, documenting any rule violations and disciplinary actions.
  • Inspects living quarters for cleanliness and contraband, preparing written reports of findings.
  • Maintains security of the facility by monitoring surveillance systems and conducting regular patrols.
  • Engages in effective communication with employers, victims, and their families while upholding confidentiality standards.
  • Serves on a 24-hour call basis for emergencies and may perform duties of Case Manager or Head Correction Officer in their absence.
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain First Responder/CPR certification and any other necessary certifications.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of departmental practices, procedures, and regulations.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and apply motivational strategies with participants.
  • Proficient in using all assigned equipment and technology.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with all departmental policies.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, including flexibility to work irregular hours.
  • Valid driver's license and a safe driving record are required.

RESPONSIBILITY: The incumbent performs routine duties following established Department policies, with priorities set by the supervisor. The work is primarily reviewed through direct observation for compliance with policies and procedures.

PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS: The incumbent maintains regular contact with co-workers, inmates, law enforcement agencies, and the public for various purposes, including information exchange and policy explanation.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Duties are performed in a detention facility and may involve physical activities such as lifting, walking, and standing for extended periods. The incumbent may be exposed to hazards associated with jail operations.
