Role Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Mission Systems Communications Engineer II to join our team at Blue Origin. As a key member of our Test & Flight Operations team, you will provide centralized support to Business Units with a focus on design, build, and maintenance of ground systems, test, and launch facilities across multiple locations.

This role is a part of a small, cross-functional team responsible for launch IT and communications infrastructure. You will be instrumental in supporting hardware-in-the-loop integration and remote launch operations for Blue Origin's first orbital class rocket and space vehicles.

This is a hands-on position focused on supporting critical communications equipment and ensuring our internal customers receive the prompt and effective communications systems support necessary for building the road to space.

Responsibilities

  • Configure, deploy, and maintain communication mission voice communications system using both IP and analog audio equipment.
  • Configure, deploy, and maintain public address system using both IP and analog audio equipment.
  • Configure, deploy, and maintain land mobile radio system using both IP, digital, and analog repeater equipment.
  • Configure, deploy, and maintain operations and mission video system using both IP and baseband cameras, transport, distribution, control, and recording.
  • Configure, deploy, and maintain critical timing systems (NTP, PTP, GPS, IRIG, PPS).
  • Plan and maintain documentation for layer 1 cabling for both copper and fiber.
  • Provide operational support for all mission systems command/control in critical test and operations environment.
  • Adaptively build highly robust, fault-tolerant on-prem infrastructure to support unique customer requirements for data systems control and monitoring.
  • Provide support in a mission-critical environment, including troubleshooting and diagnosing end-user issues in highly visible, time-sensitive situations.
  • Troubleshoot network issues and mitigate, or provide detailed relevant data such as pcaps, quantitative data, and logs to network engineers for further triage.
  • Assist in configuration management efforts by generating detailed work instructions and other industry-standard workflows for software and systems-level configuration control.
  • Generate and update engineering drawings of system deployments and ICDs (Interface Control Documents).
  • Inventory management, including maintaining internal asset tracking tools, spares procurement, physical restocking, and deployment.
  • Adapt quickly to new work scope and provide secondary support to unique one-off systems such as weather monitoring, fiber optics distribution, RF distribution/control towers, PKI, and datacenter facilities management.
  • Support occasional overtime and overnight operations to support test and launch campaigns.
  • Travel as needed to support deployed ground systems infrastructure across the country.

Requirements

  • Experience managing Linux as well as Windows server and desktop environments.
  • Prior experience building monitoring solutions, such as SNMP monitoring tools.
  • Practical knowledge and experience with standard network protocols (i.e., DHCP, DNS, NPS, SQL, SMTP, NFS, etc.).
  • Experience writing technical documentation and procedures.
  • Experience managing Active Directory environments, including writing custom account creation and management automation.
  • Hardware troubleshooting experience, ability to assemble and reconfigure workstation and server hardware.
  • Prior experience managing web servers, including basic proficiency with HTML, JavaScript, and SQL.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work on elevated structures.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to lift and install heavy server and communications equipment.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Quintron DICES VoIP.
  • Experience with Haivision IPTV, encoders, and decoders.
  • Experience with Microsemi timing systems.
  • Experience with Motorola MOTO TRBO.
  • Experience with QSC Audio System.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering.
