Compensation: Varies according to Union Contract

Work Hours: Up to 30 hours per week; hours may fluctuate based on operational needs.

Pay Rate: 45% of the highest Operator's wage during training; 65% upon advancement from Trainee to Regular Part-time Operator. Additional compensation as per the current labor agreement.


Job Overview:

The Part-time Bus Operator is tasked with the safe and efficient operation of district vehicles. This role necessitates effective communication with both passengers and fellow operators in a professional and courteous manner. Operators may encounter exposure to various environmental conditions, including dust and inclement weather. Availability for scheduled shifts is essential, and all operators are selected from the part-time pool based on competitive criteria.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Safely operate a 30-35 foot bus under diverse weather and traffic conditions.
  • Adapt to a flexible work schedule that may vary daily, with a maximum of 30 hours weekly.
  • Engage with customers, including those with disabilities, in a respectful and professional manner.
  • Comprehend and adhere to district policies, state and local traffic regulations, schedules, and maps.
  • Follow verbal and written instructions from Supervisors and Management accurately.
  • Uphold company policies while executing job responsibilities.
  • Assist passengers in making connections through clear verbal and physical guidance.
  • Ensure safe and comfortable transportation for customers with professionalism.
  • Report any safety or passenger concerns to Supervisors and Management promptly.
  • Work overtime as required, in compliance with work rules and labor agreements.
  • Adhere to district policies, contractual obligations, and directives from Supervisors and Dispatchers.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • MUST POSSESS A CDL (Commercial Driver's License) with airbrake and passenger endorsements, or a CDL with the capability to obtain these endorsements.
  • Minimum age of 21 years.
  • Valid Illinois Driver's License for a minimum of three years with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with necessary endorsements.
  • Availability for work seven days a week, between 4 AM and Midnight, as scheduled.
  • Capability to read and understand district policies, procedures, and relevant traffic laws.
  • Effective verbal communication skills with customers and colleagues.
  • Physical ability to bend, lift up to 50 lbs, twist, stoop, and maintain dexterity for wheelchair securement.
  • Physical capability to operate all passenger service and support equipment.
  • Successful completion of post-offer physical and drug screening is mandatory.
