Position Title: Part-Time Bus Operator

Requirements: Candidates must possess a valid CDL (Commercial Driver's License) with airbrake and passenger endorsements, or a CDL with the capability to obtain these endorsements.

Employment Classification: Hourly, Non-Exempt

Employment Type: Full-time | Union

Compensation Range: Determined by Union Contract

Work Hours: Up to 30 hours weekly, with variability based on operational needs.

Pay Rate: 45% of the highest Operator's wage during training; 65% upon transition from Trainee to Regular Part-time Operator, with additional compensation as per the labor agreement.


Job Overview:

The Part-Time Bus Operator is tasked with the safe and efficient operation of transit vehicles. This role necessitates effective communication with both passengers and fellow operators in a respectful and professional manner. Operators will encounter various environmental conditions, including dust and inclement weather. Availability during scheduled shifts is essential, as all operators are selected competitively from the part-time pool.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Safely operate a 30-35 foot bus under diverse weather and traffic conditions.
  • Adapt to a flexible work schedule that may vary daily, with a maximum of 30 hours per week.
  • Engage with customers, including those with disabilities, in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Understand and comply with District policies, state and local traffic regulations, schedules, and maps.
  • Follow verbal and written instructions from supervisors and management.
  • Uphold company policies while executing job responsibilities.
  • Assist passengers in making connections through clear verbal and physical guidance.
  • Ensure safe and comfortable transportation for all customers.
  • Report any safety or passenger concerns to the appropriate supervisors and management.
  • Work overtime as required, adhering to labor agreements.
  • Comply with all District policies, procedures, and instructions from supervisors and dispatchers.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • MUST possess a CDL with airbrake and passenger endorsements or the ability to obtain them.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Valid Illinois Driver's License for a minimum of three years with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with necessary endorsements.
  • Availability for work seven days a week, between 4 AM and Midnight, as scheduled.
  • Ability to read and understand District policies, procedures, and relevant traffic laws.
  • Strong verbal communication skills with customers and colleagues.
  • Physical capability to lift up to 50 lbs, bend, twist, and operate wheelchair securement equipment.
  • Ability to operate all necessary passenger service and support equipment.
  • Successful completion of a post-offer physical and drug screening is required.
