Compensation: $26.37 per hour
Purpose:
Lantern Community Services Inc. is in search of a committed and enthusiastic Shift Supervisor for our family shelter in Far Rockaway, Queens, NY. The Shift Supervisor plays a crucial role in managing various specialized functions within a homeless shelter. Candidates should possess experience in site management and staff oversight, along with a background in assisting clients with mental health challenges. This position involves supervising a team of Residential Aides and collaborating with Social Services, Maintenance, and Security personnel.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage all operational activities within the shelter during designated hours, including bed assignment processes, supply distribution, meal planning, property management, locker inspections, daily dorm evaluations, facility log maintenance, and incident reporting.
- Oversee a team of Residential Aides to guarantee the safe and effective delivery of services to clients and staff.
- Ensure clients receive prompt access to essential services such as meals, laundry, toiletries, and medications.
- Guide team members in Safe Crisis Management techniques and other crisis intervention strategies.
- Facilitate the accurate processing of documentation for new and returning clients, including submissions to relevant authorities for approval and bed assignments.
- Supervise bed sign-ins, curfew checks, and vacancy updates in the system.
- Collaborate effectively with Maintenance, Security, Vendors, and Emergency Responders on-site.
- Monitor surveillance systems and fire prevention/detection alarm notifications.
- Complete necessary paperwork, including logs, incident reports, and other required documentation.
- Assist the Facility Manager in preparing and conducting fire drills and responding to emergencies.
- Conduct regular inspections throughout the facility (both interior and exterior) to identify hazardous situations, unauthorized individuals, illegal activities, and cleanliness issues.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma, GED, or HSE required; Bachelor's degree preferred.
- At least 1 year of supervisory experience in social services, housing, or emergency shelter settings.
- Able to work independently and collaboratively to complete complex tasks in a dynamic environment.
- Comfortable and capable in crisis management situations.
- Proficient in computer applications, particularly Word and Excel, with the ability to learn new technologies and databases.
- F-80 Fire Safety Coordinator certification required (or willingness to obtain).
- NYC Food Handlers Certificate or ability to acquire within two months.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
- Demonstrate empathy towards the population served.
- Possess excellent interpersonal communication skills (both oral and written).
- CPR/First Aid Certification preferred.
Work Environment: This role operates within a shelter environment, engaging with individuals who may experience mental health issues, substance use, disabilities, HIV/AIDS, and other chronic health conditions.
Physical Requirements: The position requires regular standing, walking, sitting, stooping, climbing stairs, and kneeling. Occasionally, the employee may need to lift and/or move items weighing up to 10 pounds.
