About the Role

The Detroit Justice Center is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Policy Advocate to join our team. As a Policy Advocate, you will play a critical role in advancing our mission to deliver community lawyering services, create economic opportunities, and promote just cities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Policy Research and Analysis: Conduct comprehensive research on laws, rules, regulations, and policies relevant to community reinvestment and criminal justice reform.
  • Legislative Drafting and Review: Assist in drafting, reviewing, and formalizing legislation in partnership with movement partners and other stakeholders.
  • Advocacy Strategy Development: Collaborate with DJC teams to develop and execute advocacy strategies to promote systemic change.
  • Community Engagement: Engage with national, state, and local coalitions, committees, and task forces to promote community reinvestment and gather input on community priorities.
  • Education and Outreach: Support the creation and dissemination of educational materials, such as white papers, fact sheets, and infographics, to inform the public, lawmakers, and stakeholders about community reinvestment.
  • Legislative Education and Events: Assist in organizing legislative education events, briefings, and meetings with legislators.
  • Testimony and Media Support: Support DJC staff and community members in preparing for legislative testimony and media appearances on policy issues.
Requirements
  • Passion for Social Justice: Deep passion for and alignment with DJC's mission and values.
  • Research and Analytical Skills: Exceptional research and analytical skills, with meticulous attention to detail in drafting bills and legislative documents and solving complex information and policy issues.
  • Interpersonal and Emotional Intelligence: Strong interpersonal and emotional intelligence skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively, facilitate discussions, and take direction from community partners.
  • Education and Experience: A bachelor's degree in public policy, social work, law, political science, or a related field is required. At least 2-4 years of aggregate experience in policy advocacy, civil rights and social justice, public policy, government, labor, community-based policy advocacy, or organizing is required.
