Syracuse, New York, United States EDR (Environmental Design & Research) Full time

EDR (Environmental Design & Research) is looking for adaptable, collaborative professionals to join our Engineering Division as a Process Control Solutions Engineer. In this position, you will become part of a dedicated team of skilled engineers who possess extensive knowledge in planning, design, and construction engineering, as well as control system programming services, which will form a significant part of your responsibilities. Our experienced and qualified personnel foster a nurturing environment for new graduates and developing professionals. You will be instrumental in collaborating with both internal and external stakeholders to develop and sustain process control systems for water, wastewater, and environmental initiatives.

The automation frameworks we design consist of multi-protocol networks of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) that gather data from instrumentation and IIoT devices, facilitating real-time Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. In a world increasingly aware of cybersecurity, our SCADA solutions typically utilize managed network switching alongside highly available and virtualized servers, equipped with contemporary software applications, including HMI visualization tools, data historians, remote desktop services, automated reporting, and comprehensive remote alarm notification systems. On our team, your expertise will remain sharp and adapt to the ever-evolving technological landscape.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams to comprehend processes, project goals, critical success factors, and to devise corresponding automation solutions.
  • Engage in the evaluation and analysis of existing control systems for obsolescence, cybersecurity, resilience, and/or optimization.
  • Prepare design documentation (specifications and drawing details) and basis of design reports to facilitate the construction of new and enhanced process control systems.
  • Conduct thorough and data-driven cost-to-benefit analyses, and consolidate diverse cost breakdowns.
  • Design and maintain local and wide area networks utilizing various combinations of site-to-site VPNs, wireless Ethernet, fiber optic and copper Ethernet, FHSS, and leased frequency radio, as well as various fieldbus networks.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation of our hardware and software solutions, including specifications, guides, and standard operating procedures.
  • Program, configure, and maintain automation hardware and software, including PLCs, OITs, and HMI, reporting, and remote alarm notification software applications.
  • Establish and maintain VMware-virtualized environments consisting of multiple compute hosts and network-accessible storage (SANS).
  • Set up and configure computers, operating systems, and network devices in accordance with internal standards and guidelines.
  • Provide remote and onsite programming and maintenance services, with an estimated 20% regional travel required.
  • Participate in system testing, debugging, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis to create resilient, reliable, and high-functioning control systems.
  • Offer technical support and training to end-users to ensure system reliability, optimization, and user-friendliness.
  • Stay informed about industry trends and emerging technologies in process automation, virtualization, cybersecurity, and water/wastewater market needs.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with 0-4 years of relevant experience.
  • Exceptional problem-solving, reasoning, and analytical skills with a detail-oriented approach.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment.
  • Valid driver's license and the ability to travel within the US without restrictions.

The anticipated base pay range of $72,000-$85,000 per year is commensurate with experience. EDR reserves the right to adjust compensation based on an individual's education, credentials, skill level, relevant experience, internal pay equity, geographic location, and business needs.

EDR is a multi-disciplinary environmental consulting and design firm with over 40 years of experience, representing a career opportunity with one of the leading environmental engineering and automation consultants in the Eastern United States.

EDR's workforce comprises a diverse group of environmental professionals, including engineers, ecologists, botanists, wetland specialists, wildlife biologists, GIS specialists, archaeologists, historians, visualization specialists, planners, and landscape architects.
