ABOUT THIS POSITION
The Electrical Systems Commissioning Specialist role at Black & McDonald demands a comprehensive understanding and hands-on experience in the design, operation, testing methodologies, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrical substation apparatus including transformers, cables, circuit breakers, current transformers, potential transformers, and battery systems.
The ideal applicant is an autonomous leader with strong interpersonal skills, adept at fostering collaborative relationships and setting clear expectations with stakeholders and teams.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Provide technical oversight of commissioning and testing processes to ensure adherence to manufacturer, NETA, and client specifications.
2. Conduct in-field substation design evaluations in collaboration with engineering teams.
3. Possess a solid understanding of high voltage equipment, including transformers, switches, and protective control circuits.
4. Direct testing at both equipment and system levels to validate operational compliance with project specifications.
5. Execute project site assessments, document technical findings, and generate comprehensive technical field reports based on site survey outcomes.
6. Coordinate on-site activities with Construction Managers, Subcontractors, Clients, and Vendors to optimize field operations.
7. Ensure timely preparation and distribution of all relevant project documentation, including site observation reports, inspection records, and testing documentation.
9. Extract relevant data from project specifications, contract drawings, and applicable codes to develop project-specific inspection/test scripts and system-level test procedures.
11. Review and assess test reports, recommending corrective actions as necessary.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
A degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field (electrical/power) from an ABET accredited institution.
Familiarity with relevant professional organizations such as NETA, IEEE, NERC, and other industry standards related to testing and commissioning.
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
A minimum of 5 years of experience in commissioning and electrical engineering within HV/MV substation projects.
SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
1. Proficient in interpreting engineering drawings and specifications to comprehend the functionality of substations.
2. Strong troubleshooting skills for substation protection and control systems and power equipment.
3. Experience in contract management.
4. Knowledge of construction scheduling, planning, and execution.
5. Ability to read and understand financial statements.
6. Excellent organizational and time management skills.
7. Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel).
8. Willingness to visit construction sites as needed.
9. Capability to work in various weather conditions, both indoors and outdoors.
10. Valid Driver's License.
11. Ability to obtain necessary security clearances.
