Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Phlebotomist to join our team at Medstar. As a Phlebotomist, you will be responsible for collecting and processing patient specimens for laboratory testing. This is a PRN position, requiring flexibility to work weekdays and weekends as needed, including holidays.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collects and processes patient specimens for laboratory testing using various routine phlebotomy techniques.
  • Verifies patient identity and collects blood specimens using venipuncture, heelsticks, and fingerstick methods.
  • Ensures patient safety, comfort, and satisfaction with the procedure.
  • Accurately selects collection tubes and uses correct technique to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Receives specimens and inputs test requests into Cerner based on Invision or physician orders.
  • Centrifuges and processes specimens as required, including managed care samples.
  • Performs special draws from fistulas and grafts as assigned, following special collection protocol.
  • Documents phlebotomy and specimen processing procedures and quality assurance problems according to department protocol.
  • Provides training in phlebotomy and accessioning/processing procedures to students, laboratory employees, residents, or other designated personnel as needed.
  • Maintains adequate levels of phlebotomy supplies and keeps the phlebotomy tray and working area organized and sanitary.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • May require up to 1 year of technical or other specialized training, such as completion of a phlebotomy training program and a specialized training program in fistula/graft draw procedures.
  • 0 to 6 months experience required.
  • Requires the ability to read and write, and knowledge of grammar and arithmetic, including fractions and decimals.
Working Conditions

This position requires flexibility to work varying shifts, including weekdays and weekends, as well as holidays. Working hours may vary based on department need.
