Overview: Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you will assist in providing personalized care to patients, helping them achieve their optimal level of health. You will work collaboratively with a team, understanding the significance of shared objectives. Your responsibilities will include performing designated clinical tasks and non-clinical support activities essential for patient care.

Job Description: Key Responsibilities:

  • Administers daily hygiene and personal care.
  • Assists with routine daily activities: ambulation, ensuring nutritional needs are met (e.g., intake documentation, feeding assistance), turning and positioning patients, monitoring for skin integrity, and utilizing appropriate supplies for daily care.
  • Maintains Electronic Medical Records (EMR): Collects and records patient information (e.g., vital signs) and documents in EMR. Ensures accurate and timely filing of reports and prepares charts for admissions, discharges, and transfers.
  • May conduct point-of-care testing or specimen collection as required by the unit. (e.g., glucose monitoring)
  • Observes and reports any changes or unusual occurrences in patient conditions to the appropriate personnel. Communicates effectively with other healthcare team members to enhance patient care.
  • Participates in the admission, discharge, and transfer processes for patients and their belongings.
  • Demonstrates responsible use of resources, manages charge reconciliation, and documents charges appropriately.
  • Utilizes sound clinical judgment and effective time management skills.
  • Shows flexibility regarding workload and assignments, accepting delegated tasks while adhering to the scope of practice.
  • Maintains compliance with certifications and eLearning requirements.
  • Performs clerical duties as necessary (e.g., answering phones, monitoring lights).
  • Patient Care Technicians will perform advanced patient care skills and duties requiring additional education, training, and/or competency validation independently.

  • Blood cultures
  • Enteral tube feeding
  • Phlebotomy
  • Staple/Suture removal


Sterile Gloves
  • Donning/Doffing
  • Maintaining sterile technique
  • Established tracheostomy care and suctioning (closed and open systems only)
  • Removal of indwelling urinary catheters (M/F)
  • Non-sterile wound care dressing changes


Wound Care
  • Sterile dressing changes
  • IV removal
  • Urinary catheter specimen collection via luer lock (requires separate competency)
  • Suture tray setup
  • Chest tube setup
  • Visual acuity assessments
  • Pelvic exam setup
  • Burn dressing changes and debridement
  • Handheld Bovie pens
  • Whirlpool baths for wound care
  • Collection of cultures
  • Fecal management system care and removal
  • Ostomy device changes
  • Wound vac canister changes
  • Patient Care Technicians can perform the following skills with a Nurse present:
  • NG tube insertion
  • NG management and removal
  • Fecal management system insertion
  • ETT suctioning
  • Enemas
  • Disimpaction
  • PIV insertion
  • Other duties as assigned.

The following skills/tasks cannot be performed by the

Patient Care Technician:

Arterial and Venous Fistulas or Grafts Arterial Care
Catheter:
Insert; Remove; Setup tubing; Change dressing

Blood sampling from an intravenous (IV) or arterial catheter Central Venous Access Devices (CVAD) PICC, CVC, Implanted Port, Dialysis, Sheath/Introducer: Insert, remove, set up tubing Emergency Department Triage Epidural procedures
Catheter:
Insert; Remove; Setup tubing; Change dressing

Urinary Catheter insertion Initiate restraints Intraosseous (IO) access
Catheter:
Insert; Remove; Setup tubing; Change dressing

Midline access

Insert; Remove; Setup tubing; Change dressing

Obtain Arterial Blood Gas samples Pain pump infusion management Patient/Family Primary EducationPCA: Care and Maintenance, Monitoring Receive critical results

Ventilator, CPAP, BiPAP
Care and Maintenance Safety/

Risk Management:

Adheres to Mercy policies and procedures related to safety, confidentiality, and patient rights/regulations. Demonstrates knowledge of and practices infection prevention techniques. Assesses safety needs and provides for a safe environment: e.g., Fall Precautions; Restraint Management; Patient Identification; Unit/Departmental Specific Policies; Safe Patient Handling Engages in Quality Improvement activities that ensure and enhance the quality of patient care.
Technology:

Utilizes unit-specific technology to perform specific duties. Qualifications: Education:
High school diploma, currently enrolled in a board-certified nursing program.

Prior to employment, the patient care technician must provide student transcripts indicating completion of Fundamentals of Nursing from an accredited nursing school and a competency skills list from their educational institution.

The patient care technician must remain in good standing with their nursing program while in this role.

This position is exclusively for nursing students; if a student exits the program for any reason, they can no longer serve as a patient care technician.


Certifications:
BLS certification required within one month of hire - Other: Minimum Physical Requirements - This position requires individuals to push, pull, and/or lift 50 pounds regularly - This position requires prolonged standing and walking each shift - This position requires the ability to grip, reach, bend, kneel, twist, and squat to perform duties.

Preferred Experience:
EMT, Paramedic, or Previous Patient Care Experience Preferred

Certifications:


Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Certified Patient Care Technician (CPCT), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Advanced Unlicensed Assistant (AUA) in the State of Missouri.
