Position Overview

$2,795.38 Biweekly

Under general supervision, the Advanced Social Services Specialist performs complex casework addressing intricate individual and family challenges; develops comprehensive treatment strategies and counseling requiring professional expertise and training; undertakes additional related responsibilities as assigned.

The Advanced Social Services Specialist requires a Master's degree and experience in social work case management within a public or private social services organization. This position represents the highest non-supervisory level in the series. Incumbents execute casework necessitating the application of advanced social services knowledge and techniques, typically in areas such as adult and child protective services.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conducts case studies to evaluate issues and determine suitable treatment methods.
  • Creates intensive long or short-term treatment plans aimed at enhancing or restoring individual or family functioning.
  • Ensures that all services are delivered respectfully and in a culturally sensitive manner.
  • Acts as a casework consultant to staff members lacking professional training.
  • Demonstrates high-level skills in areas such as counseling, protective services, medical social work, family services, community organization, and research.
  • May provide specific types of counseling, including marital and family inter-relationship counseling.
  • Investigates and provides services to children in cases involving physical or emotional welfare concerns.
  • Receives reports of abuse and investigates allegations, ensuring the protection of vulnerable individuals.
  • Assesses potential foster and adoptive parents and provides counseling to foster and adoptive families.
  • Coordinates and monitors family visitations to evaluate progress toward case plan objectives.
  • Maintains accurate casework records and manages relevant correspondence.
  • Prepares and maintains documentation for court reports, case plans, and safety plans.
Minimum Qualifications

Social Worker IV A:
Pattern 1: A Master's degree in Social Work from an accredited institution;
OR
Pattern 2: A Master's degree from an accredited two-year counseling program;
OR
Pattern 3: One year of full-time experience performing advanced social work case management and a Master's degree in social or behavioral science.

Social Worker IV B:
Pattern 1: A Master's degree in Social Work and one year of full-time experience in social work case management;
OR
Pattern 2: A Master's degree from an accredited two-year counseling program and one year of full-time experience in social work case management;
OR
Pattern 3: Two years of full-time experience performing advanced social work case management and a Master's degree in social or behavioral science.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:
  • Principles and practices of organization and time management.
  • Principles of note-taking, report writing, and English composition.
  • Interview techniques and phone etiquette.
  • Principles of counseling and bio-psychosocial assessments.
  • Local socio-economic conditions and current issues in public social services.
  • Community organizations and resources available for social services.
Ability to:
  • Apply principles of child psychology and family dynamics.
  • Recognize signs of abuse and assess risk factors for clients.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills, both orally and in writing.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with legal standards.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with clients and agency staff.
