Job Title: Deputy Division Chief

Job Summary:

The Maryland Office of the Public Defender is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Deputy Division Chief to lead the Mental Health Division. As a key member of the division's leadership team, you will be responsible for ensuring the highest standards of client representation, supervision of personnel, and operations statewide.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Division Chief to develop and implement divisional strategies and policies.
  • Supervise and mentor a team of attorneys and staff to ensure excellent client representation and professional growth.
  • Represent the division at stakeholder meetings and community events to enhance the division's profile.
  • Develop and implement procedures, policies, and practices to ensure accountability, resourcefulness, and excellence.
  • Handle administrative matters, including conflict cases, and develop strategies for advancing litigation, collaboration, advocacy, and holistic representation.
  • Collaborate with the Division Leadership Team and MOPD Administration to determine communications strategy and support technology/infrastructure improvement.
  • Support and provide leadership for staff through effective resource planning, work assignments, information exchange, and goal setting.
  • Cultivate excellence and professional development amongst attorneys and staff, including providing regular in-house training programs.

Requirements:

  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, including management & supervisory abilities (2-5 years preferred).
  • Excellent writing, research, and oral advocacy skills.
  • Commitment to addressing systemic inadequacies and inequities in the criminal and juvenile justice systems.
  • Demonstrated mentorship, communication, supervisory, client advocacy, and management abilities.
  • Substantial litigation experience and strong litigation skills (min. 5 years criminal/civil trial experience).
  • Exceptional organizational and administrative skills necessary to manage dynamic teams and high-volume caseloads.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, adversaries, clients, and parents.
  • Active membership in good standing in the Maryland Bar or Bar of another state.
