The Westminster Law Library, located in a modern, environmentally friendly facility, plays a crucial role in supporting faculty research, enhancing students' legal research capabilities, and integrating contemporary technologies essential for today’s legal practice.

Role Summary

The Sturm College of Law is looking to appoint one or more skilled and committed faculty reference librarians to commence duties in the upcoming academic semester. As part of the Professorial Series within University Libraries, and under the supervision of the Associate Director of the Westminster Law Library, reference librarians are tasked with delivering exceptional reference, research, and instructional services to both faculty and students at the Sturm College of Law, as well as the broader university community. Additionally, reference librarians will engage actively in the educational mission of the law school, which includes providing instruction in the popular Certificate in Legal Research (CLR) program and developing supplementary educational resources such as research guides and online tutorials.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality reference, research, and instructional services to the Sturm College of Law and the University of Denver community.
  • Instruct in the law library's Certificate in Legal Research (CLR) program, which currently offers three distinct legal research certificates (basic, specialized, and international).
  • Provide excellent service to patrons at a combined circulation and reference desk.
  • Assist faculty engaged in scholarly research, utilizing both legal and interdisciplinary methodologies.
  • Teach a law school course (preferably in advanced or specialized legal research) and offer guest lectures or one-on-one instruction as needed.
  • Develop and maintain educational resources, including research guides and online tutorials.
  • Track usage statistics for research and instructional services to evaluate effectiveness and support data-driven decision-making.
  • Contribute to the Law Library's collection development efforts as a subject matter expert and regularly assess collection priorities.
  • Stay informed about advancements in library reference, research, and instructional services, including innovative methods to enhance workflows through new technologies.
  • Engage in relevant marketing and outreach initiatives, including programming during orientation periods.
  • Participate in committees within the law school and University Libraries system.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Educational Requirements

  • MLS (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited institution (or currently enrolled).
  • JD (or equivalent) from an ABA-accredited law school.

Preferred Experience

  • Previous experience in research and reference services within a law library.
  • Demonstrated success in teaching.

Work Environment

  • Standard office environment with occasional unexpected interruptions.
  • Quiet to moderate noise levels.
  • Reference librarian positions may allow for one day per week of remote work.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit at a computer for extended periods.
  • Ability to stand or sit in front of a classroom for extended periods.
  • Occasional requirement to move about the office/campus and transport objects up to 20 lbs.
