Job Description and Duties

Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled Research Data Specialist II to join our team at the Department of Transportation. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for collecting, evaluating, and interpreting complex data from various sources, providing sound recommendations to management, and developing and maintaining new and existing data collection systems and databases.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collect, evaluate, and interpret complex data from various sources, including structured query language, Python, and other computer programming languages.
  • Develop and maintain new and existing data collection systems and databases for the Office of State Program (OSP).
  • Provide sound recommendations to management based on data analysis.
  • Assist with the continued development and implementation of policies, programs, and reporting to comply with Federal and State laws related to these programs.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and management to analyze situations and apply laws, policies, and practices in developing balanced solutions with stakeholders as it relates to data.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, including the use of data visualization tools such as Microsoft Excel, Access, Power BI, Tableau, and other data visualization tools.

Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid driver's license is required when operating a state-owned or leased vehicle.
  • Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) required.

Working Conditions:

The incumbent works in front of a computer system under artificial light in an office setting with long periods of working in a sitting or standing position. This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans's evolving telework policy.

Special Requirements:

  • Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee's designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions.
