Job Description and Duties

Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled Research Data Specialist II to join our team at the Department of Transportation. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for collecting, evaluating, and interpreting complex data from various sources, and providing sound recommendations to management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain new and existing data collection systems and databases for the Office of State Program (OSP).
  • Utilize structured query language, Python, or other computer programming languages to analyze and manipulate data.
  • Work with software such as Microsoft Excel, Access, Power BI, Tableau, and other data visualization tools to create reports and visualizations.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of policies, programs, and reporting to comply with Federal and State laws related to these programs.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and management to analyze situations and apply laws, policies, and practices in developing balanced solutions with data.

Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid driver's license is required when operating a state-owned or leased vehicle.
  • Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) required.

Working Conditions:

The incumbent works in front of a computer system under artificial light in an office setting with long periods of working in a sitting or standing position. This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans's evolving telework policy.

Special Requirements:

  • Ability to work independently, handle multiple assignments simultaneously, learn new tasks quickly with little or no formal training, and be responsive to stakeholders and management.
  • Ability to analyze situations and apply laws, policies, and practices in developing balanced solutions with stakeholders as it relates to data.
