Position Overview
The primary objective of this role is to accurately identify, document, and monitor expenditures related to Fixed Assets, ensuring that they are properly represented in the financial statements of the company in accordance with established policies.
Key Responsibilities - This is a Salary Exempt position.
Oversees and evaluates the activity within the Construction in Progress account. Reviews transactions from accounts payable, procurement, taxation, and work orders that pertain to construction in progress expenses. Maintains comprehensive records of construction in progress in relation to Authority For Expenditures (AFE). Collaborates with engineers, plant managers, project managers, plant accountants, maintenance supervisors, accounts payable personnel, and the Information Systems department to ensure precision.
Assists in the capitalization of expenditures, maintenance of asset activity records, and management of operating lease accounting. Captures expenditures from the construction in progress account by documenting the description, value, location, and other relevant details of each asset.
Records acquisitions and disposals of fixed assets in the accounting system for all capital and fixed asset transactions, including additions, transfers, write-offs, and cost adjustments.
Gathers data and documentation related to operating leases, including rolling stock and significant machinery and equipment leases. Facilitates lease payment processes.Documents Fixed Assets transactions in the General Ledger. Ensures that all fixed asset sub-ledger accounts reconcile with the general ledger on a monthly basis. Reviews and reconciles all accounts related to construction in progress, gain/loss accounts, and prepaid lease accounts. Records the acquisition, sale, or retirement of assets in the general ledger. Responsible for month-end journal entries related to lease expenses and any other necessary journal entries to maintain accurate records.
Assists in the preparation of property tax assessment reports and government surveys.
Ensures that all necessary documents, forms, and information are included in property tax assessment reporting, various government surveys, and other reporting as required.
Contributes as a member of the Team.
Engages in the continuous development, communication, and implementation of team concepts, programs, and policies; coordinates efforts to ensure best practices among all team members.
Participates in relevant team meetings.As a team member, promotes strong cohesion regarding all significant issues; e.g., direction, annual plans, budgets, policy changes, etc.
Takes responsibility for promptly identifying any areas lacking cohesion, bringing them to the attention of the team leader, and collaborating with the team to resolve issues while actively seeking ways to enhance synergy within the broader organization.
Simmons Operating Systems Principles and Objectives: Familiarity with Simmons' established operating systems (e.g., quality, security, office environment, company policies, LEAN) is essential; understanding the responsibility to maintain knowledge of these systems and this position's role in supporting them, including the impact of individual actions on these systems and the duty to communicate concerns and suggestions for improvement.
Additional Duties: This position description is intended to guide the activities of the individual in this role and is not meant to limit the creativity and initiative of the person regarding the responsibilities of this function.
Physical Requirements: Involves entering and locating information on a computer. Requires visual verification of information, often in small print. Periodically necessitates physical verification of assets in various locations. Communicates with stakeholders via telephone, in person, and/or electronic mail.
Travel Requirements: Minimal travel is required. Occasional domestic travel to various facilities or work sites may be necessary.
Technical Qualifications: 3-5 years of experience in accounting or finance. Previous experience in Fixed Assets or Capital Spending is preferred. General knowledge and experience with subledger applications and Excel are required. Familiarity with Oracle and General Ledger is preferred.
Industry Background: Preference for candidates with experience in manufacturing or other capital-intensive industries.
Minimum Educational Requirements: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, or a related field.
Preferred Educational Qualifications: CPA designation is highly preferred.
