About the Role

The Hartford is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Staff Attorney or Senior Staff Attorney to join our team in a remote work opportunity. As a key member of our Workers' Compensation team, you will be responsible for handling a designated caseload of complex Workers' Compensation cases, including appearances before the California Workers' Compensation Boards in Marina Del Rey, Los Angeles, Van Nuys, and Oxnard.

Responsibilities
  • Analyze complex legal and factual issues, conduct extensive research, and develop well-reasoned legal arguments.
  • Independently create and present defense strategies on behalf of clients, including preparing complex pleadings, written discovery, depositions, and trial briefs.
  • Partner with Claims Partners to achieve the best results for our Hartford insured.
  • Provide effective and timely communications, information, legal advice, and other services to clients on legal and factual issues.
  • Communicate with the court, witnesses, opposing counsel, and co-counsel with professional diplomacy and discretion.
  • Facilitate prompt, efficient, and effective disposition of assigned cases.
  • Independently prepare and present witnesses and evidence at trials, judicial/administrative hearings, arbitrations, and alternative dispute resolutions.
  • Research, draft, file, and argue appellate briefs in reviewing courts on behalf of clients.
  • Participate in Team Huddles and provide in-house training to junior associates and/or claims partners.
  • Participate in claims file reviews and attend continuing legal education seminars to maintain a high level of professional expertise.
Qualifications

Qualified candidates will possess the following requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 years of legal practice experience handling complex Workers' Compensation cases (or 5 years for Senior Staff Attorney position).
  • JD from accredited law school and license to practice in the state of California.
  • Trial experience is preferred.
  • Positive-minded and collaborative team-player attitude.
  • Strong legal research and writing skills.
  • Solid MS Office proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Lexis Nexis experience is a plus.
  • Self-directed with excellent organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Strong computer skills and the ability to quickly leverage new software as required.

This position is a remote work opportunity, and our selected candidate will travel 1-4 days per week within the following geography: Los Angeles, Marina Del Rey, Van Nuys, and Oxnard, California. We offer flexible work arrangements and enjoy a business casual work environment.
