We are seeking a skilled Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgical Physician Assistant to join our team at Palm Health Resources. This role involves participating in all congenital heart surgeries, including ECMO cannulation and decannulation, while excluding transplant procedures.

Our facility is supported by a team of three surgeons and conducts over 200 pediatric cardiac surgeries each year.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver comprehensive care to patients within the Cardiovascular Service Line.
  • Operate autonomously under the guidance of an attending cardiovascular surgeon, managing a diverse range of pediatric cardiac conditions.

Conduct both outpatient and inpatient evaluations prior to surgical procedures, which includes placing orders for pre-operative assessments and reviewing all pre-operative patients on the day before or the day of surgery for clinical updates.

Perform and document thorough history and physical examinations, with initial admissions and consultations being reviewed by the attending cardiovascular surgeon before implementing care plans.

Assist in physician-led Pre-Operative Care by:

  • Drafting necessary pre-operative orders, including nursing care, medication prescriptions, laboratory tests, ECHO cardiography, ECG, radiological assessments, and securing consultations as authorized by the cardiovascular surgeon.

Evaluate significant abnormal findings in patient histories, physical examinations, and diagnostic data with the cardiovascular surgeon, facilitating further consultations or additional tests as required, and initiating suitable medical interventions.

Document pertinent findings in progress notes, including history, physical examination results, laboratory studies, and imaging reports. Confirm the operating room schedule and manage postings or cancellations as directed by the cardiovascular surgeon.

Assist in physician-directed Intra-Operative Care by:

  • Serving as the first or second assistant in the operating room.
  • Placing necessary indwelling catheters, such as Foley, intravenous, and peripheral arterial catheters.
  • Preparing patients for surgical procedures and assisting in the closure of the chest as delegated by the attending cardiovascular surgeon.
  • Monitoring and transporting patients to the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU).

Support physician-led Post-Operative Care by:

  • Writing appropriate post-operative orders and obtaining consultations as authorized by the cardiovascular surgeon.
  • Monitoring patients during the postoperative phase, reviewing laboratory and imaging data, and making necessary interventions.

Communicate any unexpected events to the cardiovascular surgeon, providing a detailed summary of significant changes in the patient's condition and outlining corrective actions already taken.

Conduct daily assessments of the patient's postoperative progress, documenting updates in the chart as they relate to the supervising physician, and implementing therapies as indicated.

Participate in daily surgical rounds and see patients in the outpatient clinic for postoperative follow-ups and surgical wound evaluations. Collaborate with research teams on projects and data collection, and actively engage in Heart Center Department service conferences. This position requires flexibility in scheduling, including availability for holidays, weekends, and on-call duties.
