Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Safety Engineer to join our team at the Office of Naval Research. As a key member of our organization, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our employees and the public.

Responsibilities
  • Identify, evaluate, and control a wide range of research and industrial hazards by applying safety design standards and codes, as well as safety and occupational health regulations, standards, procedures, methods, and techniques.
  • Review proposed renovation and construction projects to ensure safety codes are met and supportive of research.
  • Manage the design, construction, and review process for new facilities and laboratories, as well as the renovation of existing buildings, in accordance with federal, state, and local directives.
  • Study and evaluate reference material, adapting established methods to meet the assignment.
  • Provide technical advice to senior scientists, technicians, and other employees on the control of safety hazards.
  • Ensure that safety programs are adequate in design to protect workers from known or potential hazards.
  • Manage assigned safety and occupational health programs.
Requirements

To be considered for this position, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-5/10 grade level or NP-02 pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate all or most of the following:

  • Knowledge of safety engineering, engineering design, and traditional engineering disciplines (civil, mechanical, electrical, and chemical).
  • Knowledge of design standards and codes relevant to safety engineering practices and methods.
  • Knowledge of safety and occupational health principles, standards, practices, and analytical techniques applicable to a research laboratory environment.
  • Knowledge of industrial, construction, and research laboratory work processes, materials handling operations, hazardous materials, hazards associated with compressed gases, shop machinery, flammable liquids, and fire hazards sufficient to investigate and determine causal factors contributing to mishaps or incidents that may result in hazardous working conditions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management:

  • Successful completion of a professional engineering degree.
  • Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico.
  • Evidence of having successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or any other written test required for professional registration by an engineering licensure board in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico.
  • Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified in the basic requirements under paragraph A (above).

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.

A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if the selectee fails to meet the pre-employment requirements, including failure to report to any of the scheduled appointments.

The selection of an annuitant is subject to the Department of Defense and Department of the Navy policy on the employment of annuitants.
