In this role, the Risk Manager will be responsible for leading the risk management services for Bechtel's Nuclear, Security and Environmental Global Business Unit. The identification and evaluation of project risks on prospective work and the selection of the appropriate combination of risk retention and risk transfer (insurance) techniques will be a key part of the responsibilities. Services begin with the proposal stage and continue until completion of all project activity and any claims arising after completion of the work. This is primarily a specialist position which combines risk management/insurance experience with understanding requirements of both US Government and large commercial construction projects. The Risk Manager maintains contact with clients, insurers, partner brokers, and company functional and senior management representatives.
Key Responsibilities- Participates and supports Global Business Unit business and legal partners in contract negotiations with clients and others to obtain necessary protection, making use of contractual risk transfer, risk retention, loss prevention and commercial insurance techniques in a manner compatible with business development objectives.
- Develops alternative insurance strategies in response to client positions/requirements.
- Initiates recommended language and alternative provisions for liability and insurance matters (including procurement responsibility) in proposals, contracts, subcontracts, and other documents.
- Identifies and evaluates insurable risks arising from prospective project activities and available risk financing alternatives for applicable projects.
- Reviews proforma and bid documents, prepared elsewhere, to determine adequacy and economy of protection afforded.
- Coordinates enrollment into controlled insurance programs for applicable projects (in both OCIP and CCIP situations).
- Issues instructions to all projects regarding premium reporting and allocation, accident reporting and claims procedures and other matters relating to risk administration.
- Provides project and business unit personnel, including Legal, with information regarding insurance coverages and solutions for risk-related problems.
- Prepares insurance program cost breakdown for use in estimating.
- Coordinates disparate project personnel involved with insurance program arrangements including Project Management, Supply Chain, Treasury, and Safety.
- Coordinates the interface between Bechtel and client personnel, brokers, and insurers regarding insurance programs including preparing underwriting data, coordinating site visits and support duties as requested.
- Has reasonable knowledge of the insurance industry and current state of market trends in pricing and terms and conditions.
- Understands and implements appropriate insurance programs in cost reimbursable and fixed price US Government projects.
- Assists Head of Risk Management with efforts to ensure the organization's risk management policies and strategies are in compliance with applicable regulations, rating agency standards, and strategic imperatives of the organization.
- Assists in the development and training of both department personnel and the organization as a whole.
- Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) preferably in Risk Management or relevant area from an accredited college/university and 10-13 years of relevant experience or 14-17 years of relevant work experience.
- Minimum of 5+ years of relevant work experience in the construction insurance market.
- Minimum of 5+ years experience in government contracting, including applicable FAR clauses related to insurance requirement.
- High level of commitment to a quality work product and organizational ethics, integrity and compliance.
- Demonstrated track record of developing and implementing risk management strategies.
- Adapts well to and initiates change.
- Highly developed interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills.
- Team player, change agent, strategic, creative with exceptional project management skills.
- Strong communication (both verbal and written) skills.
- Has experience and expertise in the relevant insurance lines critical to the E&C industry.
- Knowledge of risk, insurance, and liability principles and concepts.
- Skilled in project contractual negotiations and administration.
- Knowledge of complex builder's risk insurance programs and controlled insurance programs.
- Experience working with estimating, project controls, procurement, engineering, and construction teams.
- Knowledge preferred for this position would be consistent with the Construction Risk Insurance Specialist (CRIS) designation from the International Risk Management Institute.
