Overview:

The Certified Respiratory Care Specialist is accountable for delivering comprehensive pulmonary care to critically ill, non-critical, and chronically ill patients across all age groups, including adults, children, and neonates. This role operates under the guidance of a physician with a degree of autonomy. Responsibilities include conducting patient evaluations and implementing tailored respiratory care strategies. The specialist performs a variety of technical and diagnostic respiratory therapy procedures throughout the healthcare facility.

Key Responsibilities:

Outpatient Responsibilities:

• Conducting Spirometry Tests
• Performing DLCO assessments
• Executing FENO tests
• Utilizing Body Box for Plethysmography
• Administering MVV evaluations
• Measuring MIP/MEP
• Facilitating Six Minute Walk tests
• Guiding patients in Incentive Spirometry
• Providing Spacer Teaching
• Administering Albuterol treatments
• Collecting Cystic Fibrosis Sputum Samples
• Conducting Methacholine Challenges

Inpatient Responsibilities:

• Upholding the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
• Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Responding to emergency situations (Code Blue and White);
• Managing airways through nasotracheal and endotracheal suctioning;
• Delivering aerosolized medications;
• Overseeing ventilator operations;
• Ensuring oral hygiene;
• Placing and maintaining airway retention devices;
• Managing BiPAP and CPAP devices;
• Administering oxygen delivery systems and monitoring therapy;
• Analyzing chest films;
• Collecting and interpreting blood gas samples;
• Performing EKG analysis;
• Documenting care accurately and thoroughly;
• Cleaning and restocking equipment as needed;
• Participating in CAP and JC surveys.
• The specialist may also take on leadership roles as Shift Leader or Team Leader.

Advanced Practice Skills:

• Managing therapeutic gases, including INO and HeO2;
• Conducting Pulmonary Function Testing;
• Assisting in Bronchoscopy procedures;
• Monitoring hemodynamics;
• Analyzing waveforms;
• Evaluating nocturnal SpO2 (Desaturation Studies);
• Conducting Polysomnography;
• Performing transport duties.

Qualifications:

A. Education/Skills:
  • Licensure and/or certification requirements must be met.
B. Experience:
  • Preferred 1 - 3 years of relevant experience.
C. Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:
  • RT or RCP License in the state of employment is required.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification by NBRC is required.
  • BLS certification is required.
  • ACLS certification is required.
  • PALS certification is required.
  • NRP certification is required.
