Job Title: Part-time Para Educator

Job Summary:

The Olathe Public Schools is seeking a Part-time Para Educator to assist in the supervision, care, and instruction of students with special needs in the regular classroom or resource room. The successful candidate will assist in implementing plans for instruction, monitoring student behavior, providing information to appropriate school personnel, and performing classroom clerical tasks.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Adapt and provide accommodations of classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the teacher to provide an opportunity for special education students to actively participate in classroom activities.
  • Aid students in and out of the classroom, including packing backpacks, note-taking, relationship building, field trips, social skills, and other activities to provide assistance to students' needs and social growth.
  • Occasionally assist students requiring support in addressing personal care needs due to medical conditions and/or physical limitations, such as restroom, nutritional, and other needs, to allow students to function in the school environment.
  • Attend meetings and in-service presentations, such as CPR, education strategies, specific disability education, and other topics, to acquire and/or convey information relative to the job functions to meet established annual state requirements.
  • Collaborate with staff to provide necessary support and information related to the student's progress as established in their individual education program under the direction of certified staff.
  • Occasionally implement behavioral plans for students as designed by the IEP team to assist in meeting special education students' needs and provide a consistent environment under the direction of certified staff.
  • Occasionally assist students with challenging and/or aggressive behaviors.
  • Implement education and behavioral programming under the supervision of the classroom certified staff to develop new skills for students.
  • Instruct students in a variety of activities in individual and group settings, such as academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills, and other activities, to meet individual educational program goals under the direction of certified staff.
  • Maintain instructional materials and data sheets to ensure availability of instructional materials and/or provide reliable information regarding student progress under the direction of certified staff.
  • Monitor students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments, such as restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, fire drills, assemblies, cafeterias, parking lots, and other areas, to provide a safe and positive environment conducive to learning.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the educational team.
Requirements:
  • Job-related experience is desired.
  • **If the school building is classified as Title I, 48 hours of college credit or the ability to pass the Title I assessment test is required.**
