Description
The City of Sheridan Police Department is actively seeking qualified candidates for the position of Law Enforcement Officer.
Qualifications for Lateral Candidates:
- STATE CERTIFIED LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER: To be eligible as a Lateral-Entry officer, candidates must fulfill the current hiring criteria:
- Possession of Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T) certification or an equivalent from another state.
- Currently serving full-time as a police officer with a state, county, or municipal police or sheriff's department.
•Retired officers or those separated due to layoffs may be considered if they meet the following conditions:
- Application must be submitted within 20 months of separation;
- Must have been in good standing at the time of retirement or layoff;
- Must hold a current Colorado POST certification or state equivalent.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Conduct patrols in designated areas to deter criminal activities and identify potential threats to public safety.
2. Respond to dispatch calls, investigate citizen complaints, and address breaches of peace, including ongoing crimes, disturbances, and accidents.
3. Carry out investigations by interviewing witnesses, complainants, and victims to gather facts; collect and preserve physical evidence for court use; and conduct follow-up investigations as necessary.
4. Prepare and submit various reports, including incident reports, non-criminal reports, booking reports, accident reports, witness statements, and traffic citations.
5. Apprehend and detain suspects to ensure public safety and maintain order, including reading rights and transporting individuals to detention facilities.
6. Issue citations and summonses for violations of laws and ordinances, including petty, misdemeanor, and felony offenses.
7. Act as a first responder to emergencies, providing medical assistance/first aid/CPR and requesting medical support when necessary.
8. Monitor traffic and enforce traffic laws, investigating accidents and assisting motorists as needed.
9. Testify in court as a witness, providing necessary information and evidence during legal proceedings.
10. Assist citizens and visitors by providing information and directions, roadside assistance, and locating lost individuals.
11. Participate in ongoing training sessions and seminars covering physical training, classroom instruction, field exercises, investigative techniques, and equipment usage.
12. Engage in community-oriented policing initiatives to foster community relations and education.
13. Perform additional duties as assigned or required.
Typical Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be at least 21 years of age by the date of hire.
- Eligibility to work in the United States.
- Completion of a POST certified academy and possession of POST certification is mandatory.
- Valid Colorado Driver License with a satisfactory driving record.
- Strong problem-solving, conflict resolution, and decision-making abilities, with adaptability to changing priorities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Effective interpersonal skills.
- Ability to meet physical, mental, and medical standards required for the role.
- No felony convictions or disqualifying misdemeanor convictions.
- Successful completion of all recruitment process requirements, including background checks, psychological evaluations, polygraphs, physical exams, and drug screenings.
