Job Overview:

Position: Chemist IV

Under the guidance of the LC Mass Spectrometry Screening Group Manager, the Team Lead for the Lysosomal Storage Disorders Screening Team utilizes specialized expertise to manage daily operations, resources, quality assurance, and high-complexity testing services conducted by the team.

Ensures adherence to standard operating procedures and quality control measures for all tests conducted by the team.

Monitors and documents quality assurance concerns. Acts as a technical authority, resource, and role model. Responsible for making critical decisions regarding the accuracy of laboratory tests on human specimens and ensuring sufficient material resources.

Independently performs specimen preparation, quality control, assay acceptability, data evaluation, result entry, troubleshooting, and final test result release, as well as maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.

Actively engages in instrument and method evaluation, validation, and optimization. Assesses and establishes specifications for new and existing tests, techniques, reagents, and equipment. Plans daily functions, activities, and leave schedules for team members while contributing to personnel management tasks. Responsible for monitoring staff performance, training personnel, and delivering customer service. Actively participates in safety initiatives. Duties are performed with considerable autonomy and extensive application of scientific knowledge and independent judgment.

Key Responsibilities:

Regular attendance and adherence to agency leave policies while performing additional assigned duties.


Responsibility 1: Manages daily testing operations of the Lysosomal Storage Disorders Screening Team.

Prioritizes tasks, schedules workflow, assigns responsibilities among team members, and oversees task progress to ensure timely and accurate reporting of chemical data.

Makes significant decisions regarding the accuracy of laboratory tests on human specimens. Identifies and documents instrument and equipment issues, performs troubleshooting, and makes necessary adjustments. Notifies the Group Manager of any significant issues or delays. Keeps the Group Manager informed about method performance and technical challenges. Reviews and submits purchasing requests to maintain an adequate inventory of testing supplies and reagents. (35%)

Responsibility 2: Oversees quality assurance activities for the Lysosomal Storage Disorders Screening Team. Ensures the maintenance of high-quality analytical reporting.

Conducts and documents periodic quality control reviews, including equipment maintenance, proficiency testing records, temperature and humidity monitoring, specimen workload tallies, training and competency records, and supply inventory to ensure consistently acceptable quality assurance and test performance.

Maintains, updates, and develops Standard Operating Protocols (SOP) and training materials. Identifies discrepancies and recommends, implements, and documents corrective actions and outcomes.

Coordinates and conducts the evaluation, optimization, validation, and implementation of new methods for screening neonatal specimens as required by regulatory standards.

Ensures that instruments and equipment, including laboratory information systems, are maintained for optimal performance and minimal downtime. Schedules preventive maintenance for equipment according to standard operating procedures.

Performs complex data analysis to assess instrument and method performance, consulting with staff and technical supervisors on appropriate analytical methods.

Responsibility 3: Conducts highly complex liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis of high-volume neonatal screening specimens. Evaluates and interprets complex data to assign final results. Performs scheduled preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, tuning, and optimization of complex analytical equipment. Prepares mobile phases, internal standard stock, and working solutions. Conducts high-volume sampling of filter paper specimens, standards, and controls for all newborn screening tests as needed. Uses technical expertise to determine specimen acceptability. Completes all documentation with required information.

Utilizes expert knowledge to investigate, interpret, assess, review, and resolve issues with atypical results, consulting with management as necessary.

Reviews and releases final results using the laboratory information management system. Identifies, documents, and resolves quality issues with laboratory data. Monitors that preparation of final report timelines are met. (10%)

Responsibility 4: Provides exceptional customer service to both internal and external customers. Serves as a knowledgeable resource for laboratory personnel on complex instrumentation and analytical issues.

Consults with healthcare professionals regarding specimen collection and submission requirements, test results, and interpretations, serving as the primary contact for technical matters related to the team's work.

Performs administrative tasks including generating regular and ad hoc reports, attending meetings, and maintaining records. Notifies supervisors of technical or personnel issues impacting laboratory operations. Participates in budget preparation, assessing equipment and staffing needs to ensure continued laboratory operations. Conducts technical presentations, training, and tours for external customers and students. Coordinates special research, evaluation, and development projects to ensure the use of state-of-the-art testing methodologies.

Independently researches new procedures and evaluates their effectiveness, determining appropriate specifications for reagents and equipment to present to management.

Coordinates research projects and implements new procedures as necessary. Assists in grant writing and submission. Promotes teamwork and excellent customer service with supervisors, colleagues, and both internal and external customers. (15%)

Responsibility 5: Assists in staffing management. Monitors and provides feedback to supervisors on team members' technical performance and staffing needs.

Trains employees on instrument maintenance, preparation of internal standard solutions, mobile phases, and performing analytical assays in accordance with standard operating protocols.

Maintains training records and recommends appropriate training and education for staff. Coordinates and participates in the interview and selection process, recommending the best candidates for positions. Communicates necessary information to staff. Encourages open communication throughout the team. (10%).

Responsibility 6:

Performs additional duties as assigned, including actively participating in disaster response and recovery efforts or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation.

Such participation may require adjustments to shift patterns and/or locations. Consistently adheres to laboratory guidelines to ensure a safe and efficient laboratory environment. (5%)

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
