Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Driver Training Specialist to join our team at Daylight Transport. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing extensive safety and development training programs for our California Class A licensed drivers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct and oversee safety-oriented training programs, utilizing technology to uphold and enhance safety standards, improve safe driving techniques, and strengthen customer service skills among drivers.
  • Assist, support, and coach drivers with on-road safety behaviors and expectations.
  • Act as a mentor and role model for drivers, promoting a culture of safety and professionalism.
  • Lead and personally conduct daily safe driving coaching events generated by telematics systems.
  • Partner with HR to conduct interviews for new drivers and contribute to ensuring a safe and compliant driver team.
  • Design, implement, conduct, and oversee elements of an authorized driver training program.
  • Assess driver trainees' abilities to meet acceptable standards per DOT and OSHA safety regulations.
  • Teach and coach each step of a thorough pre- and post-trip inspections.
  • Perform probationary observations of drivers, including observation reports.
  • Remain abreast of local service center safety scorecards and scorecard performance, and be responsible for continuous improvements.
  • Perform regular planned and unplanned observations, 'ride alongs,' and assist drivers with concerns and make suggestions for improvement through coaching.
  • Assist in implementing refresh retraining for drivers.
  • Take primary lead on all service center pre-employment and annual refresh road tests, ensuring a driver's full ability to safely operate company vehicles in the public.
  • Be willing to substitute drive and perform as a P&D driver, as needed.
  • May attend training sessions, meetings, and workshops as required for the betterment and development of Daylight Transport.
  • Investigate and analyze accidents or safety incidents involving drivers.
  • Communicate necessary information regularly to students and colleagues regarding student progress and student needs.
  • Manage student driver behavior in the classroom and while on the road by enforcing rules and procedures specific to Daylight and DOT.
  • Provide on-route 'lead by example' training with all drivers, demonstrating best practice safety activities and coaching on customer service, sales, and administrative tasks of a Daylight P&D driver.
  • Periodically conduct safety observations in the workplace.

Requirements:

  • A high school diploma or GED is required. Class A CDL and five years' experience driving tractor-trailer, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job, are preferred.
  • No preventable accidents or moving violations in the last three years.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain, an instructor's License administered by the California DMV.

Language Skills:

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
