POSITION SUMMARY:

The Aquatic Specialist plays a crucial role in aquatic services, offering lifeguarding, swim education, pool operation support, and supervision of the pool area. This position is designed to assist lifeguards and instructors by addressing member inquiries and facilitating activities on the pool deck, including engaging parents in the supervision of their children.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Supervises the pool deck area, entrances, and high-traffic zones.
  2. Familiarizes with all emergency protocols and responds promptly to emergencies in line with YMCA policies. Completes necessary reports as required.
  3. Maintains positive and effective relationships with members, participants, and fellow staff.
  4. Addresses member inquiries and provides assistance as needed.
  5. Supports staff in managing any incidents that may arise on the pool deck.
  6. Trained in the emergency action plan and understands their role within it.
  7. Participates in all required staff meetings and training sessions.
  8. Adheres to all YMCA of South Hampton Roads policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and best practices.
  9. Follows safety, cleanliness, and uniform standards related to COVID-19 prevention.
  10. Assists in various assigned areas and completes all projects and tasks as directed by supervisors.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must hold Lifeguard III certification if not a YMCA lifeguard; must achieve YMCA certification within 180 days of hire.
  • Current ASHI BLS, Basic First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certification (or equivalent from recognized organizations). Any BLS certification is valid for one year only.
  • Must obtain YMCA Swim Lesson instructor certification within 60 days of hire.
  • Ability to maintain the physical and mental readiness required for certification.
  • Must demonstrate lifeguarding, instructional, and pool operation skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Maintain all necessary certifications and training.
  • Minimum age requirement of 18.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Ability to successfully complete the lifeguard water test.
  2. Must remain alert at all times.
  3. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
  4. Ability to hear and identify distress signals.
  5. Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
  6. Ability to perform physically demanding tasks necessary for water rescues.
  7. Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distances in both normal and loud environments.
  8. Ability to work in various weather conditions, including humidity, heat, cold, and inclement weather.
  9. Must be able to lift and pull weights of up to 50 pounds.
