Inpatient Blood Collection Specialist Position at Commonwealth of Virginia
In this position, Inpatient Blood Collection Specialists execute high-volume invasive procedures to gather blood samples for laboratory analysis on critically ill patients in intricate inpatient units and nursing facilities, thereby enhancing clinical care and patient progression.
- Exhibits proficiency in collecting and addressing complex blood draws utilizing advanced methods to guarantee quality samples and minimal discomfort for critically ill patients across all age groups in a sophisticated patient care environment, adhering to established turnaround times.
- Delivers exceptional customer service through AIDET patient communication while ensuring smooth workflow.
- Employs the computer system, including mobile devices, to confirm patient identification, manage and retrieve patient lists and lab orders, review lab collection and testing details, print labels, and document necessary collection information in accordance with policy.
- Organizes, prioritizes, and frequently modifies high-volume work tasks to facilitate time-sensitive lab collections, operational efficiency, and patient care requirements alongside the interdisciplinary team.
- Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to synchronize timing and fasting prerequisites for lab draws.
- Communicates with Nursing and Providers when unable to collect specimens as required.
- Prepares and transports specimens for testing and analysis promptly.
- Demonstrates advanced technical, communication, and administrative skills necessary for independent work.
- Maintains awareness of quality, safety, infection control, and compliance initiatives.
- Facilitates the education and training of others in Phlebotomy practices.
- Handles challenging shifts including weekend and holiday rotations.
- Performs area-specific support and clinical tasks as needed.
- In addition to the aforementioned responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent required. Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program is preferred.
Experience: 1-year Phlebotomy experience in an inpatient environment is preferred.
Licensure: Certification from a nationally recognized phlebotomy organization (NHA, ASCP, NCCT, or equivalent) is preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This role requires prolonged standing, frequent walking, bending/stooping, and climbing (ladder, steps); repetitive motion involving wrist extension and flexion. Proficient communication, auditory, and visual skills are essential; attention to detail and the ability to write legibly are necessary; ability to lift/push/pull is required.
