Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Inpatient Phlebotomist to join our team at the University of Virginia Health System. As a Phlebotomist, you will play a critical role in the healthcare team by collecting blood specimens from patients in complex inpatient units and nursing homes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collect blood specimens from patients using advanced techniques to ensure quality specimens and minimal discomfort.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to patients and their families, using effective communication skills and AIDET principles.
  • Utilize computer systems to verify patient identification, manage patient lists, and document collection information.
  • Organize and prioritize work assignments to support efficient lab collections and patient care needs.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to coordinate lab draws and ensure timely specimen transport.
  • Communicate effectively with nursing and provider teams to resolve specimen collection issues.
  • Prepare and transport specimens for testing and analysis in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate advanced technical, communication, and administrative skills to work independently and make sound decisions.
  • Maintain knowledge of quality, safety, infection prevention, and compliance programs.
  • Support the teaching and training of others in Phlebotomy functions.
Requirements
  • High School Graduate or Equivalent required.
  • Completion of an accredited Phlebotomy training program preferred.
  • 1-year Phlebotomy experience in the inpatient setting preferred.
  • Certification with a nationally recognized Phlebotomy organization (NHA, ASCP, NCCT or equivalent) preferred.
Physical Demands

The job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequent travel by foot, bending, stooping, and climbing. Repetitive motion is also required, including extension and flexion at the wrist. Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills are necessary, as well as attention to detail and the ability to write legibly. The ability to lift, push, and pull objects weighing less than 20 pounds is also required.
