Job Summary

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Janitor to join our team in the Engineering Services Division at the Very Large Array (VLA). As a Janitor, you will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of all Observatory buildings and grounds.

Key Responsibilities
  • Clean and maintain offices, hallways, restrooms, elevators, stairways, shops, and other work areas
  • Perform grounds keeping duties such as litter control, sweeping sidewalks, and trash collection
  • Secure gates, sound alarms, or call security personnel in case of fire or unauthorized access
  • Permit authorized personnel to enter the property and communicate warnings safely
  • Ensure the security of all buildings and grounds by patrolling the site and reporting any unusual or suspicious activities
Work Environment

As a Janitor, you will work both indoors and outdoors, occasionally at heights above 5 feet. You must be able to carry equipment and tools, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and operate a variety of tools and equipment. You must also be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and operate a vehicle to travel to on-site work areas.

Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • One month of relevant experience and/or training
  • Effective decision-making ability and effective communication skills
  • PC experience, including email, word processing, and data entry
  • Valid driver's license by the start date of employment
