Job Summary:
The National Radio Astronomy Observatory is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Janitor to join our team in the Engineering Services Division at the Very Large Array (VLA). As a Janitor, you will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of all Observatory buildings and grounds.
Key Responsibilities:
- Clean and maintain offices, hallways, restrooms, elevators, stairways, shops, and other work areas
- Perform grounds keeping duties such as litter control, sweeping sidewalks, and trash collection
- Secure gates, sound alarms, or call security personnel in case of emergencies
- Permit authorized personnel to enter the property
- Communicate warnings safely
- Ensure the security of all buildings and grounds by patrolling the site for safety and security
- Report any unusual or suspicious activities to supervisory staff
Work Environment:
The Janitor will work both indoors and outdoors, occasionally at heights above 5 feet. The employee must be able to carry equipment and tools, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and operate a variety of tools and equipment. The employee must also be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, operate a vehicle to travel to on-site work areas, and talk and hear.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
- One month of relevant experience and/or training
- Effective decision-making ability
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and/or using sketches or drawings
- PC experience includes email, word processing, and data entry
- Valid driver's license by the start date of employment
