Job Summary

This role focuses on providing high-quality patient care services in a mental health setting. As a Mental Health Technician, you will work under the direction of registered nurses and physicians to provide basic care services to patients. Your responsibilities will include monitoring patient conditions, administering physical care and personal hygiene measures, and facilitating effective patient reports.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor patient conditions through general observations and take vital signs, neurological signs, and determine weights and heights.
  • Administer physical care and personal hygiene measures to assigned patients as appropriate.
  • Establish a therapeutic and helping relationship with assigned patients and help patients with daily living activities such as daily hygiene, showering, and clothing.
  • Facilitate effective patient reports by receiving a report and an assignment from the nurse at the beginning of each shift and communicating pertinent observations and information regarding the patient's condition to the nurse.
  • Assist the nurse or physician during exams and procedures, complete specimen collection and test measurements, and observe the patient's condition during and after the procedure as directed and supervised by the RN.
  • Assist in the pre-admission and discharge process as requested, including recording vital signs, checking ID bracelets, orienting patients to the unit, and escorting patients and their families to the exit.
  • Assist with administrative duties such as documenting observations and activity of patient, keeping detailed records, and reporting changes in patients' behavior to the clinical care team.
  • Transport patients, equipment, and specimens to designated areas and maintain the patient environment and the nursing unit in a clean, neat, and safe manner.
  • Assist in managing meal times, ensuring that patients have received the proper meal trays and observing patients' nutritional intake, and assist in setting up patient's tray and feeding patient when appropriate.
  • Provide assistance during Code 99s by calling the page operator, obtaining equipment, transporting specimens, and observing and assisting the other patients on the unit.
  • Assist in monitoring the safety of the unit and participate in the implementation of the treatment plan.
  • Participate in milieu activities and groups, observe and report patients' interactions in the milieu, intervene in crisis situations in collaboration with nurses and other mental health team members to maintain safety of patients and staff, and to promote therapeutic outcomes.
  • When assigned and following the established protocol, remain in constant attendance with patients who are suicidal or have behavioral problems.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of applicable experience in mental health services, addiction recovery.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Psychology or Behavioral Sciences, three (3) years of applicable experience working with psychiatric patients.
