POSITION SUMMARY: This role entails the provision of nursing services focused on the care and treatment of residents. The individual will work under the direct supervision of a Charge Nurse and may oversee Nursing Assistants and unit helpers as necessary.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Facilitates the adjustment of new residents to the unit, aligning with the unit's philosophy and objectives;
  • Reports any incidents or changes in resident conditions to the Charge Nurse and documents findings in the resident's chart;
  • Engages in discussions regarding clinical matters related to resident care with the Charge Nurse;
  • Collaborates as part of an interdisciplinary team to assist in the preparation, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of care plans;
  • Observes, records, and communicates any progress or changes in residents' conditions;
  • Updates care plans as necessary to reflect current resident needs;
  • Administers therapeutic treatments as prescribed;
  • Dispenses medications (excluding I.V. medications) to residents while monitoring for side effects and effectiveness;
  • Ensures proper handling and accountability of controlled substances;
  • Keeps accurate nursing care and administrative records and reports;
  • Participates in staff meetings and in-service training programs.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Comprehensive understanding of contemporary nursing practices;
  • Proficiency in applying current practical nursing techniques and procedures for resident care;
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written;
  • Ability to foster and maintain collaborative working relationships;
  • Dependability, resourcefulness, keen observational skills, and professionalism;
  • Capability to operate medical equipment (e.g., suction machines, oxygen units, vaporizers);
  • Ability to maintain detailed records and generate reports;
  • Physical condition suitable for the demands of the role.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A) Completion of a nursing program recognized by the New York State Education Department qualifying for Licensed Practical Nurse licensure in New York State; or
B) Completion of a nursing program recognized by the New York State Education Department qualifying for Licensed Practical Nurse licensure and holding a limited permit to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in New York State, with the expectation of obtaining full licensure within six months of appointment.
