Job Overview

The Lead Respiratory Therapist is responsible for delivering exceptional care to adult and geriatric patients, aged 18 and older. This role emphasizes the significance of respecting each patient's rights, dignity, and individuality in all interactions.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Provide expert consultation to fellow Respiratory Therapists within the unit, offering assistance as needed and reporting performance issues to management.
  2. Support the Manager in addressing unit-specific needs, mentoring, and training new staff and employees assigned to the unit.
  3. Oversee daily responsibilities of other therapists and fulfill all lead therapist duties as outlined by management.
  4. Educate patients and caregivers about treatment purposes and procedures, ensuring proper documentation on patient education forms.
  5. Administer physician-prescribed treatments, including Hand Held Nebulizer Therapy and various oxygen delivery systems, to enhance patient respiratory function.
  6. Set up, operate, and monitor ventilators for patients requiring assistance with spontaneous ventilation, participating in the ventilator weaning process under physician guidance.
  7. Maintain ventilation during cardiopulmonary resuscitation and perform intubation as necessary.
  8. Attend departmental meetings and in-services to stay updated on best practices in respiratory care.
  9. Document all relevant treatment information and patient responses in respiratory care records and patient charts.
  10. Perform tracheostomy care in accordance with hospital policies, including timely replacement of trach tubes and proper documentation.
  11. Ensure the proper functioning of respiratory therapy equipment through regular maintenance and repairs, including pre-use checks on ventilators.
  12. Conduct regular rounds to monitor patients' ventilators and oxygen equipment, ensuring compliance with hospital policies.
  13. Assist in preparing patients for physical therapy and transport, adhering to safety guidelines for oxygen tank storage.
  14. Participate in the Hazardous Material Program, understanding the risks associated with exposure to various materials.
  15. Comply with established safety protocols and contribute to performance improvement initiatives.
  16. Maintain confidentiality of protected health information (PHI) in accordance with organizational policies.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

Must possess a current RT license to practice as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) in the state of employment, accredited by the National Board of Respiratory Care.
