Position Overview:

The Lead Respiratory Therapist is responsible for delivering exceptional care to adult and geriatric patients, ensuring their rights, dignity, and individuality are respected in every interaction.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Provide expert consultation and support to fellow Respiratory Therapists, addressing performance issues and collaborating with management to enhance unit operations.
  2. Assist in mentoring and training new staff, ensuring they are well-equipped to meet the specific needs of the unit.
  3. Monitor and oversee the daily responsibilities of other therapists, fulfilling all lead therapist duties as directed by management.
  4. Clearly explain treatment purposes and procedures to patients, documenting all educational interactions on the patient education form.
  5. Administer physician-prescribed treatments, including nebulizer therapy and oxygen delivery systems, ensuring optimal patient care.
  6. Set up and manage ventilators for patients requiring respiratory support, participating in the weaning process as necessary.
  7. Ensure proper ventilation during emergency situations, including intubation when required.
  8. Attend departmental meetings and in-services to stay updated on best practices and advancements in respiratory care.
  9. Document all relevant treatment information and patient responses accurately in respiratory care records.
  10. Perform tracheostomy care and change trach tubes in accordance with hospital policies.
  11. Maintain and process respiratory therapy equipment, ensuring cleanliness and functionality.
  12. Conduct regular rounds to check on patients' ventilators and oxygen equipment, performing necessary maintenance.
  13. Assist in preparing patients for physical therapy and transport, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
  14. Participate in the Hazardous Material Program, adhering to safety protocols to mitigate risks.
  15. Understand and act upon responsibilities related to recognizing abuse and participating in performance improvement initiatives.
  16. Safeguard protected health information (PHI), sharing it only on a need-to-know basis.

Qualifications:

To excel in this role, candidates must demonstrate proficiency in all essential duties. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for qualified individuals with disabilities.

Education and Experience:

A current RT license to practice as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) in the state of employment, issued by the National Board of Respiratory Care, is required.
