Job Title: Senior Director, Philanthropy and Government Relations

Monell Chemical Senses Center is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Director, Philanthropy and Government Relations to join our team. As a key member of our leadership team, you will be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive fund development program to support the organization's mission and goals.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement a strategic plan for fund development, including annual revenue goals and plans to diversify and increase the organization's budget.
  • Lead the development team and ensure alignment with overall organizational objectives.
  • Serve as the exemplar and driver for developing an organizational culture of philanthropy and foster a culture of philanthropy.
  • Work with executive and senior management team in developing effective messages for donor audiences.
  • Support and coach/mentor Executive Director, Board, leadership, faculty, and staff as partners in building donor relationships.
  • Serve as a member of the executive management team.
Major Gifts Program:
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift prospects and donors.
  • Develop personalized strategies for engaging high-net-worth individuals, corporations, and foundations.
Donor Relations and Stewardship:
  • In partnership with the Executive Director and other relevant staff and departments, maintain and strengthen relationships with current donors to increase gift size, frequency, and retention through donor events, social media, online, and direct mail streams and informal communication.
  • Ensure timely and appropriate acknowledgment, recognition, and reporting for major gifts.
Campaign Leadership and Oversight:
  • Oversee preparation for future capital campaigns, endowment campaigns, and other special fundraising initiatives.
  • Monitor campaign progress and ensure achievement of financial goals.
Board of Director Relations:
  • Prepare development reports including plans, accomplishments, and donor pipeline for the Executive Director in advance of board meetings.
  • Coach, support, and encourage the Board's development efforts.
Budgeting and Financial Management:
  • Develop and manage the development department's budget.
  • Monitor fundraising expenses and ensure cost-effective operations.
  • Work with the CFO to develop unearned income goals consistent with the financial needs of the Center.
  • Identify financial resources to meet income goals.
  • Monitor department's income and expenses and report department's progress in unearned income and expenses.
Marketing and Communications:
  • Collaborate with the communication and marketing team to create compelling fundraising materials and donor communications.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Communications on branding and a marketing plan for development.
  • Promote the organization's mission and impact through various channels.
Data and Reporting:
  • Utilize donor management systems to track and analyze fundraising activities.
  • Coordinate all development activities with staff and track progress against annual development work plan and calendar.
  • Manage and strengthen development processes and systems, including recordkeeping, gift acknowledgments, renewals, mailings, and calendar.
  • Prepare regular reports on fundraising progress and outcomes for senior leadership and the board.

Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience in developing, managing, and implementing a successful, comprehensive fund development program.
  • Experience preparing an annual work plan and calendar to achieve goals.
  • Demonstrated success with generating increased funds from individual donors, both major donors and annual appeals, through a coordinated, strategic approach.
  • Demonstrated success in identifying and securing new foundation grants and major gifts of five-figures and up and experience managing high-level donor relationships.
  • Experience with capital campaigns and comprehensive fundraising initiatives.
  • Preference for hands-on fundraising experience related to basic scientific research.
  • Knowledge of planned giving and experience with online fundraising preferred.

  • Proficiency in creating persuasive fundraising materials and donor communications.
  • Demonstrated success in learning the details of an organization's substantive work and applying that knowledge in drafting successful fundraising solicitations.
  • Knowledge of digital marketing and social media strategies for fundraising.
  • Exceptional writing skills, especially for grant proposals, reports, and related fundraising materials.
  • Ability to think creatively about how to effectively engage new donor audiences.
  • High level of integrity and commitment to ethical fundraising practices.
  • Knowledge of fundraising laws and regulations.

Education and Experience:

  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as business, communications, or nonprofit management. A master's degree or CFRE (Certified Fundraising Executive) certification is preferred.
  • Considerable experience in development, with a focus on major gifts fundraising, 15 years or more.
  • Extensive experience working across organizational areas.
  • Proven track record of working with executive and senior leadership, board members, and volunteers in a nonprofit setting.
