About the Role

The Smithsonian Institution is seeking a highly skilled Facilities Services Leader to join its team. As a key member of the Office of Facilities Management and Reliability, you will be responsible for leading a team of Building Service Workers/Facilities Services Workers in maintaining the Institution's facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead a team of three or more Building Service Workers/Facilities Services Workers in performing tasks involving physical labor and equipment operations, as well as general custodial duties.
  • Check work in progress and when completed to ensure supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met.
  • Provide input to supervisor on performance appraisals and position descriptions, and additional on-the-job training requirements for individual employees.
  • Notify supervisor or leader of apparent defects in building and exhibit systems, such as leaks, cracks, breaks, unusual smells, etc., as well as apparent safety hazards.
Requirements
  • Pass Pre-employment Background Investigation
  • May need to complete a Probationary Period
  • Maintain a Bank Account for Direct Deposit/Electronic Transfer
  • Males born after 12/31/59 must be registered with Selective Service
Physical Requirements
  • This position requires the physical ability to perform moderately heavy work, including lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Work outside in all weather conditions with exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, and insects.
  • Climb ladders and stairs.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
Qualifications
  • In order to be rated qualified, an applicant's overall experience and training must indicate possession of the minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the duties of this position.
  • Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).
  • Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
Additional Information
  • This position is included in the bargaining unit.
