Job Title: Medical Assistant: Surgical Practices

Responsibilities:
  • Assist physicians and advance practice professionals with direct and support-related patient care
  • Utilize the Electronic Medical Record to complete documented best practice workflows accurately
  • Document and update patient medical history within EMR guidelines
  • Complete daily work lists, including order tracking, tasking, and document import
  • Comply with all regulatory item collection
Clinical Support:
  • Perform pre-visit planning and chart preloading in accordance with established guidelines
  • Prepare examination rooms with needed supplies, instruments, and equipment
  • Escort patients to exam rooms, introducing yourself and explaining the rooming process
  • Prepare, instruct, and position patients
  • Ensure providers are on schedule, considering emergencies and unexpected interruptions
  • Prepare specimens with documentation for processing in accordance with Laboratory regulations
  • Care, clean, and sterilize equipment per instruction or established procedures
  • Order medical supplies and medication/immunizations as needed
  • Dispose of used supplies properly and follow established infection control and biohazard policies
  • Call orders to pharmacies for medications under the direction and supervision of the provider
  • Ensure vaccines are handled and administered in accordance with standards of the NH Immunization Program
  • Complete and process referrals, pre-certifications, or pre-approvals as needed
Patient Access:
  • Accept and return patient calls under the supervision of the nurse or provider, using appropriate telephone etiquette
  • Schedule appointments and process orders for patients as requested by the provider
Organizational Expectations:
  • Attend work daily, on time, and complete scheduled shifts
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA
  • Contribute to positive team performance and a culture of service excellence through effective communication and respect
  • Maintain appropriate interpersonal relationships with staff, patients, and visitors
  • Practice workplace safety daily
  • Participate in hospital Service Excellence initiatives and trainings
  • Attend and participate in department staff meetings and sign off on review of meeting minutes
  • Complete all required annual education on or before the due date
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Individuals must possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the primary functions of the job, with or without a reasonable accommodation.

  • Minimal physical effort required with occasional light lifting to a maximum of 25 pounds
  • Ability to effectively manage considerable mental stress
  • Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word
  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and convey information in a clear, concise, and accurate manner
  • Familiarity with computer and other business machines
Qualifications:
  • Graduate of an approved Medical Assistant Program preferred
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification, Registered with the New Hampshire Board of Registration for Medical Technicians preferred
