Position: Ohio Petition Circulator/Canvasser

Organization: One Fair Wage is a national 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to advocating for increased wages, improved working conditions in the service sector, and the elimination of subminimum wages across the United States. In light of recent workforce dynamics, many individuals are opting out of subminimum wage positions, prompting employers to enhance compensation to attract talent. The political landscape for advancing wage-related policies has also shifted significantly. In response to this pivotal moment, One Fair Wage has initiated a comprehensive campaign aimed at promoting legislative measures and ballot initiatives in 25 states to elevate wages and abolish subminimum wages nationwide, while also mobilizing millions of low-wage workers to engage politically.

Role Summary: One Fair Wage is seeking both entry-level and seasoned field personnel to undertake various public-facing roles, including the circulation of initiative petitions, voter registration, and direct voter engagement in support of our campaign to raise the Ohio minimum wage to $15 per hour and eliminate subminimum wages for tipped workers, individuals with disabilities, and youth.

Reporting Structure: Ohio Petition Circulators will report directly to the Regional Organizing Directors.

Ideal Candidate Profile: We are looking for individuals who are enthusiastic, sociable, and self-motivated, possessing strong communication skills derived from experiences in the food service, hospitality, or healthcare sectors. Candidates should demonstrate excellent time management abilities and a commitment to advocating for economic justice.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Circulate initiative petitions and voter registration forms throughout Ohio.
  • Achieve daily performance benchmarks.
  • Engage with community members, leaders, and affected workers to recruit additional paid and volunteer support for our organizing efforts.
  • Identify and participate in high-traffic events.
  • Stay informed about Ohio's political climate, collaborating with supervisory staff to develop effective messaging that aligns with One Fair Wage's vision for economic justice.

Qualifications:

  • Comfortable with public speaking, particularly in one-on-one and small group settings.
  • Access to reliable transportation or willingness to utilize public transit.
  • Previous experience in the service industry, particularly as a low-wage or tipped worker, is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Commitment to upholding One Fair Wage's professional standards.

Employment Details: Petition circulators may choose to work either part-time or full-time, with a maximum of forty hours per week. This is a temporary, at-will, non-exempt position with compensation at a rate of $25 per hour, including eligibility for performance-based bonuses.
