Job Summary:
The City of Roanoke, Virginia is seeking a highly skilled Community Engagement Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our organization, you will be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive public information and community relations program to promote the City's services and activities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a public information and community relations program to encourage media coverage of City activities, inform the public on local issues and activities, and create a positive public image of the City.
- Coordinate news releases and other public information with various City departments, public officials, and media representatives.
- Collaborate with departmental staff to plan, organize, and coordinate advertising and public relations programs to promote favorable publicity for the City.
- Participate in the preparation of media presentations, exhibits, reports, newsletters, and informational materials prepared for public or in-house distribution.
- Work with departmental staff and other agencies to develop useful information tools, encourage volunteerism, and strengthen the sense of community identity.
- Serve as a City representative at community meetings, civic, and neighborhood events.
- Answer inquiries and provide information to the public.
- Receive and refer citizen complaints to appropriate departments or agencies for disposition.
- Develop and implement a program to train City employees in public contact techniques.
- Coordinate with departmental staff to conduct various City-sponsored community events.
- Develop and implement a program to welcome new businesses and residents, and develop an employee recognition program.
- Assist in the reception of dignitaries, groups, or visiting classes, and conduct tours of City facilities.
- Closely partner with internal and external partners and/or contractors on the planning, development, and operationalizing of outreach and community engagement efforts.
- Prepare reports, memoranda, and correspondence, and maintain statistical records.
- Implement and monitor budget expenditures, and provide executive management with early warning and practical options to potential cost overruns.
- Direct the allocation of resources to achieve timely outcomes and measurable goals within budget.
- Assist in developing and implementing policies to ensure the efficient operation of the section or program.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, contractors, or temporary employees.
Requirements:
- Knowledge of media relations, open government, and citizen participation concepts.
- Knowledge of public information, public media, public relations techniques, resources, and methods.
- Knowledge of office practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of local, regional, and state government and their relationships.
- Skills in organization and time management, community outreach and engagement, program planning and coordination, community meeting organization and facilitation, and public speaking.
- Ability to read and interpret documents, prepare routine reports and correspondence, and communicate orally and in writing.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form, and deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Language Skills:
The ability to read, write, and speak English fluently is required.
Work Environment:
The work environment is typically moderate, with occasional travel to various locations within and outside of Roanoke.
